rear end clunking
Hi guys,
I've just bought an fd and I'm getting some pretty bad clunking noises from the rear end, mainly on tight, low speed corners.
I pulled the rear end out and it seems that the tailshaft has been knocking on the handbrake cable mount and a couple of other places on the transmission tunnel. The PPF looks fine (its painted yellow,, does that indicate its a mazdaspeed one?? ) and the diff mounts looked ok too but seemed a bit flexible so I tryed to stiffen them up with some washers. This has helped but the clunking is still there.
The diff is apparently a cusco one and is very tight, so I think its twisting around tight corners and bashing the tailshaft into the tunnel.
Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it?
Thanks,
Rob.

You have to check the spherical bearings that are found at several areas of the rear suspension arms.
Jack the car up and grab the wheel at 9 and 3 oclock and try to move it back and forth on the horizontal plane. You will probably find that the "bushing"/bearings are actually worn and loose. It only takes a minute amount of slack at the bearing to have that annoying clunkiness.
Cheers,
David
