rear clunking but don't think it's from suspension

getting pretty bad rear clunking and so far, I don't think it's coming from the suspension.

I am thinking it's coming from the rear hatch strut because when I lift up the hatch, the hatch actually feels quite lose and can be easily shaken left to right and produce similiar clunking noise.

thoughts?

You can always try to lower your hatch and see if that helps out the noise

it's not a squeaking/cricket type noise but clunking. I guess it could be from the suspension but it's rather loud and seems to come from the hatch struts

What kind of suspension are you running? I've had the stock rear upper mounts wear out and make lots of clunking noises over every undulation in the road. Coilover upper mounts are much more solid and can be noisy even when new.

What sort of clunking are you noticing? Does it only make noise when you hit bumps?

Mine only clunks when coming to a stop when my suspension settings are soft. I stiffened them and the clunking is still there but less noticeable so I think it has to do with the coilovers.

Check to make sure that the center nut on the shock absorbers are snug (34-46 ft lbf). My car's rear end was making quite the racket with every undulation in the road and I solved the problem once I tightened the nuts.

My recommndation would be the same as beckrx's along with checking the interior trim in the rear. Some things may not be fastened tightly.

Check to see if your exhaust is hitting anything. That's what my mystery clunk was...my 2 rear rubber exhaust hangers were blown out, and the muffler was sliding around on 'em, hitting the the frame of the car.

Ahhh Clunk

I finally replaced the rear pillow bearings thinking it was going to solve this clunk. Nope. The bearings were definately shot but the clunk is still there. New delran bushings and trailing arms, not toe arms though. They still look OK to me. I'm thinking the damn power plant frame is cracked again!
