Question Ready to get IC...Please help...M2 large SMIC or XS Engineering FMIC?or

Need to get IC. I have the following parts but not yet installed.
1. G-force ecu
2. RP competition fuel pump
3. M2 downpipe wrap w/ thermo-tec
4. N-tech BMK
5. RP triple race pulley
6. Fluidyne radiator
7. Pettit AST
8. Greddy TR-evolution full race exhaust w/silencer from japan
9. Greddy intake elbow
10. Greddy boost and water gauge
11. Greddy Profec-B electronic controller
12. Greddy Turbo timer
13. Re-amemiya intake (more likely to be change to a M2 intake)
14. Magnecor 10mm R100 wires
15. NGK spark plugs

So guys please let me know which IC I should get. I heard about good things about M2 large SMIC and XS-ENGINEERING'S FMIC (According to Shane from XS has no overheating problems due to its Apexi's core design plus bigger than M2 large IC). What are the PROS and CONS of both of these IC. Thanks. BTW, I don't want to waste money, I rather over-engineer the parts I'm going to put in my car, so I don't have to change them again. Just my 0.02 cents.

Dang, you got a lot of work to do. hehehe
Anyway, I have never heard of xs enginneering fmic so I can not direct you there but if it has the apexi core then you should be okay, as you stated, on overheating issues. The m2 large ic is a very nice unit but causes a slight pressure drop. Should not be a big deal for you with all those mods. Good luck on you decision.

Shitz...and I thought I had a lot to do on my...you are the king my friend

anyways I am partial to SMIC's so personally I would choose the m2's large. FMIC are allright..but more for show...and they really look good with aftermarket front fascia. I've heard SMIC are better for track cars..but I have no numbers to back up that claim.

Agreed. This is also something that I heard from Jon (want2race). It makes sense too, the air has to travel farther to get to the fmic than it does to the smic.

i thought xs discontinued their fmic?

the good old fmic/smic debate again, all have their pros and cons, and depending on what you want to do to the car, ie- daily drive, road race, drag car, or a mix of one 2 or all 3....

fmic's in general have more cooling capicty due to larger core and direct air flow, smic although may have a large core still get all their cooling air through (roughly) a 2x6 duct opening..

fmic' do restrict air flow to the rad, this can be a problem for roadracers, but ive heard of a few who run with out problems

personaly i went smic, then with my new single setyup i went fmic, but you got yorself a delema since you picked prob 2 of the top 5 ic's out there

no spefic order

xs- if they still make it
rx7fashion- 1700 almost same as xs
m2- small or large
greddy- huge but requires *fitting*
apex gt- delta fin core, what im gonna be using

The pressure drop on the M2 will be FAR less than the FMIC. Its clearly one of the positives of a good SMIC setup. Not only will you get additional pressure drop from all the additional tubing and bends of a FMIC but the core itself will cause more pressure drop(think about it: thinner AND longer straw to breathe through)

Bacon, I just talked to Shane at XS and he said that they still make them.

Did anyone ever made a real test regarding FMIC vs. SMIC? I'm very interested to see the results.

I also talked to Jason at M2 Performance, and he said that the Large IC works really great and they use the same IC in their race car. But, have they tested their IC in daily street driving? rx7eaven have said that "the air has to travel farther to get to the fmic than it does to the smic." That makes sense. I think the real pros and cons on FMIC and SMIC are as follows again only my 0.02 cents:

FMIC
pros: very good cooling, can accomodate bigger size IC, away from heat soak from engine and radiator, looks good from the outside

cons: blocking good air flow through the radiators (depends on what kind of core design), need fabrication or less to install and more labor

SMIC
pros: easy installation, no battery re-location or miniaturization (depends on IC), sleeper, engine bay looks good

cons: heat soak from radiator and engine (I live in LA so it gets really hot in the summer), need to upgrade the intake

I think the cure to both is a good quality vented hood, that works.

Please correct me if I'm wrong regarding the matter. Thank you.

XS does not make their intercooler anymore.
Front mount all the way over a stock mount for a street drivin car. Pressure drop is overrated.
