Re Amemiya Short Shifter

Just bought the Re Amemiya Short Shifter from CORKSPORT (thanks, Derrick), and now trying to figure out how to install it on my 93 VR. I've never done a short shifter before, so any help is greatly appreciated.

pull the center console and the rubber insulators underneath. undo four 10 mm nuts holding down the shifter plate and undo the shifter's 4 bolts. Change over the shifter bushing if your shifter allows. refill any lost tranny fluid and reseal.

search if u can

I hope you are not too disappointed with this shifter. It's not really a short shifter, just a shifter with a shorter arm from what I've read.

I have ran about 7k mile with this shifter installed and even though it's not the most aggressive short shifter on the market. the pros of the RE-A are well worth having in the FD. 1 point being, not notchy like others.
best of luck with the install.

Yea, I've searched through the threads, and it seems that the RE shifter isn't completely "short" when compared to the other aftermarket shifters. Honestly, I just wanted something to replace the stock shifter and boot, and I found the RE shifter through corksport for a little over $100, so it was a steal. I've decided I'm going Mazdaspeed shifter when I do a few more upgrades. Running 100% stock as of now (with R1 lip and strut tower).

Pinkrx7: Thanks for the tips. I will try them and get back to you. I'm thinking I will have another question by tonight.

Does the center console come off easily?

unscrew the shifter *** first and gently start lifting the console and prey you don't break any tabs. just go slow and have Patience.

HAHAHAHA...thanks. That's one of the biggest things I was worrying about -- Don't break the tabs!

Put it in neutral...makes it a little easier to install IMO. Keep an old towel or big rag handy to keep any oil from the old shifter from dripping on anything in the interior. The FSM also specifies some gear grease on the lower bushing and the ball-pivot before lowering it back down into the gear oil.

just take it easy when you find resistance and locate the tabs. try pushing them in with your finger to make it easier

Yea, do not have trans fluid on deck right now, but managed to get the console off. Found that the rubber is cut, so new rubber! Haha...

I guess I'm waiting until Friday.

Well, if they discontinued the Mazdaspeed shifter, I'll either have to look everywhere online for it, or start a trial-and-error series with other aftermarket shifters.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I just might end up at Mazdatrix. It gives me an excuse to get more work done :]

The Pettit SS and IIRC rx7store SS are the same as the former Mazdaspeed.

Is this true? Ive looked at their kits now and it says it only has a 20% shorter shift. I thought the mazdaspeed was around 50? I know the Mazdatrix one is about 50%.

Without doing a search, I'm pretty sure rx7store SS used to be a Mazdaspeed copy. Maybe they're using a different supplier now.

Ya i believe they might of switched but im not sure. I thought i remember seeing that it used to say 50% now it says 20%. Pettit racing has the same thing listed.

When i checked out mazdatrix it is a 3 1/2" throw instead of 6" so about 42%.

Yup, 2 weeks ago. I took it to a shop since I was getting other things done. I noticed a significant decrease in shifter height, at least 3 inches. Having it low is ok, but I personally like shifters close to my steering wheel. But it's nice to have it low for comfortability. The throw itself doesn't feel too much different. I'd say 15-20% decrease in throw from the original pivot. The best charactaristic is how smooth the shifting is. It's just as smooth as stock, if not smoother, and having the throw slightly decreased gives the whole setup a better overall feel.

I may switch to Mazdaspeed/Mazdatrix later down the line. I have the Mazdatrix short throw on my '86 NA and I love it. The shifter is tall, about 6 inches from my steering wheel, and the very short click-in gears was a plus. Weird at first, but very beneficial when slamming into gears at 100 mph :]

I hope you enjoy the RE shifter.

My buddy has the B&M. I thought it was a bit notchy, but then when I got my FD, I can't stand the stock throw and actually am looking forward to getting a B&M for mine.
