Racing an FD3S

I have been planning on getting into road racing for a long time. I am a total beginner when it come to racing, but everyone has to start someplace.

I have always loved the 3rd gen RX7 and therefore decided that I would really like to get one and use it as my track car. My plan was to leave it basically stock until I became a better driver because the stock power output is more then enough to start with. Eventually once I become better at driving I planned that I would turn it into a full on track car.

I have recently read many horror stories about this car and am starting to think that it may not be the best idea after all since road racing is very abuses on cars. I would be sure to do everything I can to keep it reliable and maintained but I am wondering if it will really be worth it.

I would appreciate it if I could get some feedback.

Read all the sticky posts and make your decision. Many of us road race the FD and enjoy the car and the power, but with racing come broken parts and for the FD they are expensive

Road racing is great, but yes it does put a toll on the car. Basically, just be prepared to spend money for your enjoyment. I recently lost a motor at the track. While it sucks, I can't be mad as I'm trying to do a racer's dream on a street racer's budget.

this car handles and goes as good as it looks.
don't listen to the ppl telling you it's expensive.
you can race these cars stock, but the 7 would be happier with a DP and a temp and boost gauge. i get by without problems

I just went to Lime Rock this past weekend for the first time and i had a blast with my FD. i just made sure i did all the maintenance that need to be done before going...oil, spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid/pads...and the car performed quite nicely...it never stuttered once and had an average coolant temp of 86C while on the track (this is with stock FMIC and a Fluidyne Rad).

Personally, i don't think it's worth owning an FD unless you take it to the track. If and when you do, you'll know why the FD is so highly praised for it's all around performance...and the FD can handle it...it's what it was built for.

here's a picture of a couple of the cars i went up with (including the NSX in the background running on the track)

Here's another picture of a car that looks at home on the track:

and a closer pic of the NSX makin' it's rounds on the track:

unfortunately i don't have any pictures of my car on the track since my group all went out at the same time, so i didn't have anyone to take pictures for me while i was out on the track.
