Race Track top speed

Can people post up some info...

1) tracks you have been on (e.g. the Glen, VIR, Mid-Ohio...)
2) your level of driving experience
3) track mods on your 3rd gen
4) fastest speeds you've hit at any given track

I'll start...

1) Glen, VIR, Mid-Ohio (hence my examples!)
2) beginner... only 4 track events...
3) HKS intake, HKS catback, downpipe, under drive pulley, M2 Stage 2 ECU, ground control coilovers, Hawk blues in front, all season tires (Pirelli p7000 supersports...245/45x16)
4) At each track, I've only hit about 130mph. Note: at the Glen, I only had the intake and catback. At VIR, I had already added the downpipe, ECU, Hawk blues (for track) and underdrive pulley... at Mid-ohio, I added the coilovers.

My car has dynoed at 275HP.

I'm just curious as to how fast these things can get, especially given a good driver... Ok, to be specific, I'm curious how fast MY car could get given where it is and given a good driver.

1) Passenger in a WRX modded
2)Driver has had around 1 year of driving
3)WRX had full exhaust, boost controller.
4) The track was Sebring and the fastest we hit was 130

On a 2nd note, I rode in a Porsche 911 that did 145 to 155 and there was an RX-7 there but I never got to talk to the guy. Im not sure when Im due to go back.

oh wow man... you are just getting started!!!!

top speed isn't the number you should go by... when you gain more experience, your average lap time will get MUCH better.

i would say the most important thing on the track (for a beginner) is having the right TIRES. Suspension would be a close 2nd.

1) Mid Ohio and IRP
2) beginner
3) HKS intake, downpipe, HF cat, HKS exhaust, Hawk pads on slotted brembo rotors, stock boost level, Pirelli p8000 tires on stock rims.
4) 140 at IRP (before Tein coilovers) 145-147 after the coilovers (because i shot through the curve into the straight faster)

At VIR, WGI, SP well driven FD's with anywhere from 350-450hp can hit 160+

On all the above tracks I max out at 145 which is gear limited in 4th. I still have the stupid tall 5th gear which is useless for track duty so end up holding it at redline in 4th at the end of the straights at these tracks, which sits me right at about 145 with the shift light screaming at me the whole time.

I will defer to the above comment though that it is not about top speed but about lap times.
120rwhp cars that top out at 120mph can run lap times lower than mine.

I don't disagree about the lap times -- I know I can get better at that! In fact, I had an instructor with a 3rd gen RX (approx the same as mine, but some extra suspension mods, and hoosiers) and was running about 15-20 seconds faster per lap than me. I don't know what his max speed was there, though...

My first event at the Glen, my instructor had an '87 ('86?) BMW 3 series (track only car... fairly gutted, slicks, roll cage, etc...) ... maxed out at about 110mph, but had WAY better lap times than me!

I don't pay much attention (if any at all) to the speedometer while tracking. Any attention to the dash is usually directed at the tachometer to see if I gained a few rpm off the corner from the last lap or to accomplish the next shift, with any residual attention directed at the other gauges to (hopefully) warn of impending problems.

It's fun and all to see how fast you're going once in a while, but if you spend too much time worrying about achieving that "top speed" at a track, you won't be ready for the corner that follows.

Hmmm... I have only been to the west coast tracks. The fastest I saw was about 150mph on the banked oval at California Speedway. Plenty fast for my taste.

As Crispy said a big limiting factor is the overly tall stock 5th gear. I hit 140mph really fast and then... LUUUGGGGG...

4) 175 mph on a "long straight"

But really, I would love to go to Sebring or some kind of racetrack and drive my car as it were meant to be driven!

damian that's crazy! the car seems to accelerate the same from 60 all the way to 160. I cant believe you held 140 going into that turn! It scares me just one tire in the grass is all it takes!! be careful

and pianoprodigy you have absolutely lost your mind going 175 on those roads. Imagine if a cop saw you doing that? you'de be a passenger the rest of your life when you got out of jail.

I don't frequently go that fast. That 175 mph run was on a cool Sunday morning with absolutely no traffic on the Gandy Bridge. Most of my "races" end at around 140. I definitely wouldn't go to jail either. A good attorney can get you out of jail time for a traffic violation. At the same time, I recognize the risks and do my speeding responsibly.

Ill tell you one thing damian, one track ive raced on is the datyona track, and this was the oval and the road course version. I had a chance to use a old porsche turbo that was modified and the track is lllllooooonnng. Easily in the road course i got up to 109mph, but up on the oval easily 192mph. With your mods and the track you could hit the 200mph barrier with ease. thats a track to race on, and the One called road america is a huge track as well

datyona 3.8mile course including the road version

road america 4.3 mile

it is a huge track, but the main straight you are going uphill, so the top speeds are actually lower than at BIR

Somewhat off topic, but how does everyone get to race on these tracks? I've been wanting to take my 7 on mid-ohio but have no idea what you do. Do you have to take a racing school or what.

^^^ Yes -- you can look at different schools to find out who are running where....

If you look at the link below, it is one resource that shows who's running at what venue.

http://vista.pca.org/jsr/jsrpca/dales.htm

You could probably also contact midohio (http://www.midohio.com) to see if they have any events scheduled, and then contact those people...
