quick! Which way does the air filter face?

quick! Which way does the air filter face?
I took out my air filter not thinking about the fact that it is square. Do the ridges go from side to side when the filter is in place or from the front to the back of the car? Also, Do you only have to grease one edge of the air filter seal or all four?
