At normal operating temperature mine sits slightly lower than the middle.

Not sure if its meant to be sitting dead set in the middle or maybe its the angle I have my drivers seat which makes it look like that.

I've only seen it climb above the middle once and the buzzer went off straight away and I just shut off the car.

The stock gauges are not accurate... they give you a range. Lower than middle is normal but not neccessarily warm. I have an aftermarket temp gauges (recommended to purchase), when my stock guage hits the middle ish after just starting it, or driving it, my aftermarket gauge still says 40 degrees meaning its still very cold, so their not accurate.
