Quick Radiator Fan question

Can anyone come up with a reason why only one radiator fan would come on? I studied the wiring diagrams and it appears they are always supposed to come on together...

Only one of mine comes on and even if I hardwire the second to the battery it doesn't seem to turn so I think the motor is just dead.

Thanks in advance.

If you connect the fan directly to the battery and supply power and it still doesn't come on, then yea, the fan motor is dead.

That sucks those things are expensive and a pain to swap out. If you haven't upgraded your radiator now would be a good time to do that as well!

Burned out. I had one dead myself. Call Malloy Mazda (cheapest). Pretty easy to change once you pull the intercooler, battery, and intake. Just remove the fan shroud with the fans attached, swap motors and put on the blade. You are good to go!

Thanks for the replies, I arranged with a guy in the classified section to get a used one for $75. Then I'll get the original repaired and keep it as a backup.

I didn't think there was any way only one should be on.

On a related note, anyone know why one fan has 4 blades and one has 5?

Supposedly for anti-resonation characteristics at certain rpms, but some have said they've changed to either all four or five blades on both sides and haven't encountered any excessive noise problems.
