quick question, theres a fd at a local shop near my house and they arent 100% sure whats wrong with it. they installed a power fc awhile ago, and the guy at the shop was tellin me that the car is REALLY slow. he said the turbo was only boostin at 4psi. im not sure if its the stock twins or single. my question is, if one of the apex seals blew, would the turbo boost low like that? it would run slow like they said, but im not sure if it would lose pressure on the turbos? any info. thanks

 

If the engine acts normal the rest of the time, it's a separate issue. Probably a simple boost leak - something they should have little trouble solving. If it's not a boost leak then they may have trouble if they aren't familiar with rats nest work.

i have that same problem with my fd. it idles hard though, i think i have a cracked/blown apex seal from what ive been told. but it only boosts at 4-6 psi max.

 

so if the motor is blown (Apex Seal) the turbo WOULD boost low correct?..im not sure how the car idles, we didnt get into it that much. i dont even kno the owner.

 

...yeah....better check the blow-off valve...if it goes whoosh...then its leaking air...you can check it with a thingy-mahjig that had a doodad on it

...then again... you might be able to diagnose the problem with a compression test...search the forum, maybe you can use a regular piston-engine compression tester to get a rough idea.

 

well if they let me mess around with it, i'll just do the finger over the hole compression test. then i'll contact the owner and see if he wants to sell!!!!!! it

 

also, lets say the motor is blown. how much do you think the owner would sell it for? hypothetically( not sure if that how you spell it) speaking. mileage is unknown, and its in pretty good condition. black, i think its a r1. has the stock front lip and a rear wing

 

Unknown mileage? Must not be a clean title then. I'd offer only what it's worth in parts - maybe 5k if everything is really nice. 3K if I suspected *anything* other than the engine is having problems.

From what I hear, a blown engine is most obvious when it's idling - it won't idle well at all. The faster you get it going, the smoother it gets. I imagine the stock ECU will always put the car in limp mode and prevent significant boost, but I don't really know. The other thing is that a blown engine will often tear up the turbo blades, which of course would affect its ability to boost.

Just get a proper compression test on it before spending money. There's no reason not to.

go to Ebay, search for all the "Completed" listing near your zipcode...or as far as you would be willing to travel. ..then search the current auctions and autotrader online. Then make an "edumacated" decision.
