quick airpump question

the airpump pumps air into the ACV correct?

will it still work fine (pump air correctly i mean) if i just bypass the ACV and run piping directly to the cat temporarily just to pass emissions?

i hope so or it looks like i might be stopping at the chevy dealer for an electric pump

well....i dont believe so - looking at the secondary air injection system in the maint. manual. the acv works by vacuum to open and close a slew of solenoids that are in line with the air pump to the exhaust

million dollar question - the airpump is just that, a pump so its going to output air as long as its spinning. if you run a hose straight to the cat from the pump will you pass emissions? who knows - possibility exists for too much o2 to be injected i would think and maybe someone would have a problem with that?

i hope so or it looks like i might be stopping at the chevy dealer for an electric pump

the part i was unsure of is how the airpump works. i know it's got power to it is on a magnetic clutch that is turned on and off and certain RPMs. i wasn't sure if it'd still work if you bypass the systems it's supposed to go through. like if the ECU would see that there's no air being pumped into that and not bother sending power to the pump.

would too much o2 hurt though? i just figured if it was constantly pumping that it would help burn off the excess emissions and help dillute any remaining. correct me if i'm wrong there.

the mixture tested must be correct , pure air through the pipe will fail the test .I understand that is not the situation. ,If you have a controlable ecu you can plug the air pump fitting on the cat then lean out the idle mixture to pass a test. good skill to you.

You are correct, the pump is engaged with a magnetic clutch. It operates from idle to about 3200 rpm and then disengages.
