Questions from a modification dummy....

My buddy has asked me to do some mods on his RX7. I am converting it to single turbo and he wants to dump his rat's nest but it looks like it has useful stuff on it.

1. The Purge Control Solenoid valve is on it and I suggested he keeps that. And then I thought about his Apexi computer. Will has aftermarket computer operate the solenoid for the purge control valve? If it doesnt I should toss that into the bin as well.

2. The fuel pressure regulator has a solenoid on the rat's nest as well. Same question. Will the after market computer control that? What does the solenoid do? Why not just have the FPR have vacuum without the solenoid?

3. The double THrottle Contrl Diaphram also has it's own solenoid on the nest. What the hell is that anyway? And same question. Will the Apexi control it? I don't think I should be ripping stuff off the intake manifold that I have no idea what it does.

He has also dumped the air pump and EGR system with a whole handful of block off plates I installed. He also gave me a block off plate for the idle control valve but I won't take that off. How in the hell would the computer control the idle and raise it when the A/C is on or the engine is cold etc....This is hard when you have no idea what you are doing. It said in the instructions "only to be installed by a ASE technician". He has ignored step one.....He's doomed.

All of those can be eliminated if your state is emissions free at least.

The power FC will run a single turbo setup provided it gets tuned well , and you have the injectors to match the new flow .

there are write ups about how to remove each and every one of those try the FAQ above this , and a quick search regarding each of the above topics .

And just do some research , take your time , and good luck with your friends car .

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-turbo-749702/ a little vacume hose diagram so you know what you're getting into , look lower and you will notice some more basic or stripped out diagrams with alot of what you mentioned deleted .

Now there are options to use the OEM EBC from the power FC as a boost controller for the single i'd suggest looking at that as well . depending on your friends economic situation could be an idea to save a bit of moneys

Good questions.

First off, the PowerFC will control all the stock emissions hardware and solenoids just like the stock ECU. I believe you can even pass emissions with it.

1. The purge control solenoid takes gas vapors from the charcoal canister and injects it into the intake manifold to be burned. IMHO, it's a good idea, I don't really like venting gas fumes to atmosphere, that's just too explodey sounding .

2. Fuel pressure regulator solenoid bumps up fuel pressure on hot starts to help the engine start. If you've ever had an FC with hot start issues, you know what's up. It's a worthwhile system but some people just run a vacuum line to the FPR and eliminate it - it does clean things up to remove it and many times you just have a minor annoyance.

3. Double throttle control is solely there to keep you from going full throttle when the car is cold. That's it. Some people have thought it does some other trickery, I hooked up a boost gauge to mine to see how it works, it is JUST closed until the car is about 50-60 deg. C water temp then it goes and stays open. Just gut the whole thing and remove the plates, better airflow and cleans up things. You do need a special blockoff plate for the intake manifold when you pull the butterflies out. Banzai Racing sells that plate separate or in their kit.

I don't like removing the ISC - it's small, it's out of the way, and it does its job just fine. No reason to remove it.

Will do! I'm having fun! I like screwing up someone else's car! My buddy has the bucks so I think I will just install a high quality boost controller. I will take my time too since I'm having so much fun! We will work on it some more when he gets back in town in a few weeks. Must be nice to be loaded. He gave me a parts car and I'm taking out the useful bit and mailing to someone to find good homes for the stuff.

I'm doing a lot of searching but I still have not idea what size injectors to use with his T55 or where to get a fuel rail for them. He is shooting for 350HP (I suggested he does not go crazy) so I hope I can figure out soon so I can get stuff here for his return so we can continue to play.

I've not had this much fun since I installed a Callaway Turbo kit on my 1983 Rabbit GTI (My first car and I still own it BTW). (Showing my age)

Thanks again!

I want the Idle Speed Control to work so I plan to leave that intact. I will make sure to vent the fuel tank to the charcoal canister.

I will inquire about the kit from Banzai. Thanks for the tip!
