Question - What purpose does the plastic black thing on the block...

When I was helping a friend remove and reinstall his engine, We couldn't seem to get the black plastic thing to seat good that attaches to the metal pipe that comes off the block under the oil pressure sensor. It's going to a hose that goes into the firewall and to the heater core. Anyone have any ideas what the plastic piece is for and why you can't just attach the hose to the metal pipe (would the rubber melt before the plastic piece?)?

Just curious why it's there.

Sounds like you are talking about the "Quick Disconnect" (oxymoron) part of the coolant hose connection.

A lot of people have run without it. However, you'll have to use a different clamp on it. It does add some sort of insulation for the hose since the coolant at that point is extremely hot.

Thanks for the reply and your right about the quick disconnect, what a pain in the *** to take it off. Not the hose but the plastic piece.
