question on Defi D series gauge

I'm looking for a water temp gauge. I already have a Defi D series boost gauge. I'm looking into the same series for a temp gauge but from what I understand they are mechanical. But I went to their web site and they show it like a electrical. They have the self checking sweep than the link or Bf series. I'm wondering if anyone has one that can give me more info on them and where to installing the "sensor".

I believe that's the one I have. It is electrical. It was installed before I bought my car but the guy unplugged the stock gauge and wired the new one up. Now the stock gauge doesn't work at all, no big deal but I like to have all my gauges working...

I run one in my car. It's not a mechanical gauge. It has its own electrical sending unit and a "full sweep" needle.

All of the Defi gauges of all three series are electrical gauges, EXCEPT for the D-gauge boost gauge. That single exception is strange.

A local mechanic shop is installing a defi water temp gauge for me.. They called me and said there are 4 tires and one sender. They said one wire is for power 1 for ground 1 for light and 1 for signal.

They said when they installed the gauge the gauge goes all crazy. Do you know where I can find a diargram on how to install teh water temp for the defi??

Look into the FD illumination/ground system. It's kind of non-standard, and many shops would not know what to do with it. Basically, instead of using a variable positive charge to the cabin, the FD dimmer controls lighting by alternating the ground on and off very rapidly. This is fine for the stock stuff, but a lot of aftermarket gauges aren't going to like essentially being shut off and on hundreds of times per second. Maybe you should have them look into that.

EDIT: You can do a search for other gauge installations and see what people have run into. For myself, when I installed my GReddy V2 boost gauge, I actually left a wire off! I got a constant power source from the ACC wiring in the steering column, ignition II from the turn signal tree, and ground from the ground circuit for the cluster illumination. Since the FD uses a modulating ground signal to affect dim, there is no use for the separate illumination wire.
