Q about AC removal

I've read pretty much every thread regarding the removal of my AC and I think I'm ready to make a start tonight.

I just have a question regarding the removal of the freon which you have to do first.
My car is currently not running and therefore I cant take it anywhere to get the freon removed and I cant find anywhere that will come and remove it for me at my house so I'm left with trying to remove it myself so I have a few questions -

1. where abouts do you begin to remove the AC and therefore where will the freon begin spewing out.

2., will it make one hell of a mess or is it easily contained and easy to clean up.

3. does the freon come out under high compression? e.g. am I to expect some sort of high pressure explosion? ( this is my biggest concern )

cheers
K

freon is not a liquid it is a gas. it will come out in a high pressure form this is depending on how much is actually in your system. Think of it like a tire, your tire is filled with air, when you take the valve off of a tire it escapes quickly.

As to what to do with it, you can probably have someone come out and contain it for you. letting it out into the open air is a big no no

Letting that out into the air is really really really bad for the environment. R12 (what came in the car) is also really valuable. You might be able to get someone to come up and evac the system for you just so they can get the R12.

You need a recovery unit and a tank to do it yourself.

Just push the schrader valve pin on one of the service fittings. It will come out just like a tire.

Its not a big ******* deal. Buncha tree huggers.

Cracks me up... these fools put midpipes on their car and run around all day catless but whine like little bitches about releasing a little Freon.

I've been guilty of this myself in the past when I was young and dumb, but I won't do it anymore. I suggest having it properly evacuated and reclaimed. I am also against midpipes on street cars. That being said, if you decide to release it yourself, use caution. The gas can spray out rapidly at high pressure and cause serious injury. Look away from the valve and do not breath it in.

you know.. i removed my complete AC system besides whats under the dash when i started rebuilding my fd.. now since its soo close to being ready to drive here in the next months.. and considering how hot this summer has been.. Im going to reinstall it just in case I ever want it.. chances are ill just roll down my windows but you just never know! plus it doesnt hurt you that much in power if its turned off.. maybe a hp or 2 if that even.. its more weight than anything and its not even that heavy!

quit eating taco bell everyday for a month and it will counter act the weight differance

ok i had working AC in the car when i first got it like 5 years ago. It worked for about 2 years then i kinked the drier lines putting in a new IC. It was bearable at first but now with this summer heat it gets tough. Windows and sunroof are open 24/7 but because the car is black with black leather it gets HOT. If i am in the car more than 20 mins driving my back gets sweaty and its very annoying. The car also creates ALOT of heat on its own that while stopped it makes it that much worse.

Ive since ripped out the condensor while replacing a radiator since it wasnt bei ng used but its all about to go back in. I just need to get a new condenser(line broke when removing) and a drier and i'll be back to the wonderful world of AC!

dont do it if you live in a place that gets HOT in the summer

Talking

i would advise against letting R-12 into the air, but then again i run a midpipe so i cant say much.

but i will say that if you do let it go get the hell outa their when it goes, and it will come out at high pressure. Leave the area because R-12 does displace oxygen and it will fill your lungs and sit in them (if you breath alot of it in) because it is heavier than air. Suffocating on R-12 would not be pleasant.

oh and dont get caught releasing R-12, people get very angry about that.

oh and it will make a mess from compressor oil and such all over if it comes out fast, best bet is to use a schrader and do it slowly.

Freon can exist in the system as a liquid or a gas. If the system is fully charged then there will be both in the system, but as it escapes it will expand and become a gas and will absorb heat in the process, so be sure to keep yourself clear of the rapidly escaping refrigerant, lest you get frostbitten.

I suggest that you loosen bolts at the dryer and let it slowly leak out over the course of several minutes to an hour. Compressor oil will be carried out of the system with the refrigerant, so it will make a bit of a mess.

Personally I would never remove ac in a street car. I hate getting out of the car sweaty and being miserable when driving. These cars generate to much heat as is. Plus good luck finding a girl that will want to put up with it when she is dressed up nice and the two of you are trying to go out. But hey, to each his own.
