Funny this is the first I've ever heard of a Targa top on a FD but I have been kicking the idea around for a few weeks and photo shoped a few pictures... Hope you like them! The roof line would be it hard to do a good job without leaking but I don't plain on driving in bad weather now do I? I've done a few more that look Much better then this but are to big to upload, anybody want to host?

Don't put a sunroof in an R1, just buy a FD with a sunroof.

It is cheaper, easier. A sunroof will never work out right as a conversion.

An aftermarket sunroof would butcher your roof. The factory sunroof follows the contour of the Zagato bubble shape to the roof. Not only would a flat sunroof look bad, it would also ruin some of the aerodynamics of the car. Don't get one.

targa top will not work on an FD, well money can buy anything. Look at all targa top cars. The windows are not supported by a metal frame like an FD is. All targa tops have just the window and it presses up against the body for a seal. In order to make an FD a targa, it would have to be seriously worked on and welding would be a bitch. Then you have to worry about how the windows are going to seal up against the body. It would look awsome but would cost allot more then how cool it looks

Trade your car in for a FD with a roof, or if you want a targa get a Supra, Del Sol or a Porsche.

2 things:

1) STOP smoking (I don't give a **** about your health, but it ruins the interior )

2) DON'T get an aftermarket Sunroof. I have seen SO many aftermarket sunroofs that never looked right. Sell the R1, and get a touring.

I'm not an autobody guy, but.........

If you're hell bent to have a sunroof in this particular car, then screw the aftermarket install, and have the entire roof cut off and replaced with a sunroof equipped factory roof. Probably readily available from a Mazda specialty wrecking yard.

Seems logical that cutting the roof at the tops of the A & B pillars, and rewelding the new roof onto your car would be feasible. That way you would have the sunroof controls mounted in the headliner as well and the end result would look factory original.

IMO, R1's are great, but I wouldn't trade my touring for one specifically because of the lack of a sunroof.

good luck

Yeah, I won't put a sunroof in my base either. I would just get a used miata or a vert. You can get those for $3-5k sometimes. They are reliable and can be your daily driver or sunday drive car.

All these comments, and not ONE reply mentioning STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, the reason that the r1 did not come with sunroof was for structural integrity and weight savings (see struct. integ.) the sunroof option adds about 70lbs from the factory, do you think that an electric motor and some rails weighs 70 lbs, NO that extra weight is put there in the form of more metal trying to re-enforce the body.

Rx7's were designed as a "space Monocoque" structure, meaning the Roof carries significant amounts (almost equal to other parts) load in an effort to keep the chassis "together"
So, go ahead put a sunroof in- No one here can stop you-but you have been warned-
AND try not to get one put in that wont EVENTUALLY leak, rattle shake etc- overtime- not to mention I can almost guaruntee you you will get rattles and squeecks right away after the install.

Same comments apply for the targa, unless you add a full cage- be prepared for a death trap. IMO

Thats what I was going to say! No really. If you cut your R1 you will lose alot of Structral Integrity. Even more so if go Targa. The chassis will lose a tremendous amount of strength and will twist and bend a whole lot more. Go Targa and kiss some handeling G's goodbye. The ride quality will probably degrade as well. Go to Supraforums and ask them how much most of them like the Targa. They whould kill for a Hard Top, not just beacuse they are rare. The Targa Top Supra has problem with the dash beacuse of the car flexing, it rattles, shakes, and makes all sorts of noise. If you really want a sunroof sell the R1 to someone who want one (you should have no problem finding someone to take it off your hands) and buy a Touring with one factory. You will notice a performace decrease, but ot like the one you would feel ******* up a perfectly good R1 chopping it up putting a POS sunroof in it.

Thumbs down

not really a good idea. Just get one with the sunroof in there. $3000 to $5000? I'd rather get a Blitz single turbo Kit

we could put a sunroof in if u want. it would be $1000 or less. that is a big part of what we do. dealerships give us the cars people buy that want a sunroof. it saves the dealer form having to order another car. the guy at our shop that does them has been doing them for about 15 years mostly in new cars that don't have a sunroof or it wasn't an option.
