putting the bearings back on after 5th gear syncro

i just got done replacing my 5th gear syncro. now i'm in the process of putting everything back on. Nw i'm to the bearing on the main shaft. I was using a hydraulic bearing presser and someone said that maybe i shouldn't be doing it that way. He said that it could put pressure on everything else and end up cracking stuff because the shaft was moving down. I havn't seen any warnings of this inthe book. How did you guys press this bearing back down? Will it break stuff if i use a press?
thanx in advance

I just bought a piece of pipe at home depot that fit against the inner bearing race but also fit over the shaft. Then I heated the bearing up some in an oven to make it expand a bit and carefully whacked it down into place with a mini-sledge hammer.

I have done a few this way with no bad results. It does sound like a valid concern, but not necessarily a common problem.

anyone else have any bad experiences with presses? any concerns? Pounding it down with a pipe is basically the same thing as pressing it so i think i'll go ahead and press it tommorrow unless anyone has any objections.

Just go slow. and heating the bearing would help a bit.

Bearing

If I remember correctly I walked mine down the shaft with a brass drift and a deadblow hammer, alternating in a triangle rotation. took a while but no pressure on any internals.
