Purpose of the slave cylinder boot?

Does that boot hold pressure or does it just keep dirt out? I've been having clutch prpblems and just found out mine is missing.

Thanks..

It keeps dirt out so the cylinder walls don't get scored with grit and then eat the seals...

Your slave cylinder may be bad because it didn't have a boot.
