Sorry the pics a little hazy.
The fins on my primary exhaust side look f**ked! all bent and jaggered.
I suppose thats what they get like after 175k ay

When you take close up pics, you have to press the little flower button on your camera first.

175k. You're speaking 175,000 kilometers since you're in New Zealand right? How many miles is that, like 100,000? I've got 143,000 on my original turbos. Burns a little oil, but still boosts 10 psi. Were yours still working and boosting?

Looks like one of both of these is true, neither of which is "normal":
- debris went through that turbo (e.g. a broken apex seal)
- melted?

ok I got sum better pics

the first two are the primary and the last is the secondary exhaust turbine.
I brought the car with 10k on the rebuild and she boosted and pulled fine but towards the end of changing over to a set of series 7 stockers with only 30k on them ( which I'm in the process of doing now) I noticed that I was getting next to no boost out of the primary and she was blowing a bit of blue smoke under boost even though I could still hit 10 psi no problems.

Wether they were damaged before the last owner rebulit the engine or they have since melted I dont know but the engine still runs very good.

actually if you look compare the two ( 1st and 2nd turbo) you can see that the lower part of the fins on the primary have COMPLETELY DESINTERGRATED AND GONE!!! its weird, almost like they have benn hacked off with something, the question is , where did all the bits go ?? and why does my engine still run fine?

thats really nothing to what i have seen over here at pettit. those hks filters with all the holes in them allow nothing but dirt to sand blast your fins. the exhaust side is normal for that high of miles when you turn the boost up on the stock turbos they get stressed out.

could this be a symptom of my getting low boost on my primary?

Thats exactly what they look like when pieces of apex seals go through them. Usually they get out of balance when that happens, and start to pass oil. Most of the time the cartridge is not even reusable ( which is why Turbo City doesn't even rebuild them anymore ).

well I got one guy saying it an apex seal
I got another guy saying its simply what happens when you push stock twin past stock boost levels over high kms

my engine still runs fine so I'm guessing its the latter ( I hope)

unless before it was rebult it blew an apex seal which in turn did some damage to the fins and since the rebuild over a period of time they have progressivly gotten worse until they finally desintergrated

I think that turbo at an apex seal, and was not replaced when the engine was rebuilt.

That would be my bet, as well. Exactly what mine looked after the engine breaking an apex seal and having it pass through the turbo.

come on! that is not normal wear an tear, anyone with common sense knows better. that is from an engine seal coming out through the exhaust and hitting the turbine. as far as retrieving the pieces, you can shake out your cat... they may be in there.

...and debris reaching the compressor via the intake affects the hot side turbine how?
