Pros and cons of disassembling an engine?
I've started working on breaking my engine down to the long block in preparation to get it sent off for a rebuild (though I haven't decided who I want to rebuild it or when this can happen....no money right now) but I have this growing curiousity to find out exactly what happened when my engine "blew". So I have been contemplating going ahead and taking it all the way apart, or at least far enough to see if the rotor housings are completely fucked. But it seems that I have read on some of these rebuilders' sites that they don't want an engine if it has been disassembled?

1) the average person probably wont be able to tell what happened, other than to say that there is damage inside. Sometimes experience is required to determine condition, wear, and cause of damage.
2) many rebuilders wont accept a disassembled core, this can cause you a problem and add cost for you when it comes time to rebuild.
3) there's increased risk of damage to individual parts once disassembled while a whole shortblock can be moved around without fear of internal damage. This is the reason rebuilders generally dont like a disassembled core...that and the fact that some people would disassemble several of their own blown cores and "reassemble" one out of all the bad parts so they come out ahead, while the builder gets stuck with the bill.
