I got the car home on Wednesday last week and started reassembling the car. So far I probably have about 10-15hrs in reassembling the back of the car and putting all the guts back in the drivers door (does anyone else hate that black crap they attach the vapor barrier with?).

I'm hoping by the end of the week I'll have the wiring and all the interior in except for the dash.

How do you store all the parts so that you remember where they all go? Or have you rebuilt enough of them to know by heart where everything goes?

thats damn good work, i would like to see the final product. Do you also perform a motor rebuild while you redoing the whole car, just so its basically back to a new car.

 

The garage is literally a war zone of parts off the CYM and other FDs I've parted over the years. This particular CYM lead a totured life and had been completely repainted 2-3 times. The bodyshops that painted it hadn't really masked off anything very well so everything had yellow overspray on it.

Long story short, the seals, gaskets and interior are coming out of the wrecked R1 donor sitting next to it, along with any nuts and bolts I'll need to keep it looking almost new.

I have done enough of these cars so I pretty much know where everything goes, but it REALLY helps to have a reference car sitting there when I get stuck.

 

The car ran and drove when I got it. The trans was rebuilt not long before it was taken off the road and it has a reman engine. The brake pads, rotors and clutch were literally 2wks old.

Ironically mechanically the car was in very good shape, that along with it being a CYM are the only reasons I decided to save the car. Well that and I didn't know it needed a new floor until after I bought all the repair parts for the front and the car was gutted. The floor repair ended up costing me about $1250 extra ($650 parts, $500 labor and some extra paint).

 

You most be related to the body guy. What did he charge you for all that work???

 

As of right now, $7400, that included painting two hoods (CF and stock) and a little die cast model.

Are you going to spray the underside with any sort of underbody protection?

I wonder if you could get some of that film stuff that you see on new cars on auto transporters - put that on some of the panels to keep them from getting scratched or chipped during re-installation. That would be pretty slick.

Speaking of the black goo that holds the vapor barrier on - I wonder if you can get that stuff new. Doesn't really seem to be RTV, as it's not vulcanized, it stays gooey.

Anyhow, I'm sure you're enjoying being able to bolt stuff back on it! Looks great!

The bottom of the car has some light undercoating under the paint. I'm not going to add any other chip protection, I think that film stuff would stick too well to the bumpy bottom of the car. Otherwise I won't drive it on gravel roads and it isn't a show car.

The butyl stuff that holds the vapor barrier on is available new, body shops and stereo installers use it frequently. Stereo installers put that crap everywhere when they are in the process of screwing up your car.

Oh, Dale if you want it I have an extra FD jack for you.

 

I'd just be worried about chips in the paint under the car eventually turning into rust. Dunno how much undercoating Mazda does from the factory - most cars have dealer-installed undercoating that's sprayed everywhere .

I remember seeing the picts when you first got it. You'll know every single inch of that car by the time your done. It's coming along really well, hopefully it will be all worth it in the end, like your saying goes "do it right, do it once!".
