Problem with my winter beater
Problem with my winter beater

Question for engine gurus 3.2 problems

I have a 1997 trooper Ltd with 120k km 3.2 SOHC,
Anwyays here it is. My engine has a knocking sound( no it is not the ticking sound from valves, etc) Anyway it is not present at idle but starting just off idle it is present through all RPM range, however, the knock is much lessened on deceleartion. Also, it is almost non-existant when I first start the engine in morning, hotter the engine get`s the worse it is.
I disconnected each plug wire at a time, and heard no change, I jiggled water pump around and found no play. I felt the timing belt covers and detected no change in pitch.
I mean it sounds like a bad connecting rod bearing, but no changehwne I take out plugs. Could it be water pump even there is no play in it?
BWT, knocking starts to shake the truck at 100 km/h +, the soudn is never really that loud, I mean I had a rod go in a car before and it was bloody loud as hell.
WHat do you guys think? anyone have any suggestions for me?
THanks,
Philip

20w50 and some sawdust.
Sounds like it could be rod bearings to me too. You should be able to get out your mechanics stethescope (broomstick or long screwdriver) to eliminate accessories like water pumps, etc..
I put a motor back together (in a total pinch) with 2 very questionable rod bearings (you could see quite a bit of the babbot) and it made noise very similar to what you describe. Sounds fine at idle but once you start spinning parts around the noise is very noticable.
Someone ever run it very low on oil?

Just so you know all troopers knock no matter what. I dont know if its engine design or what but that all knock. Just like all passports, rodeos, and pathfiners knock. If its not too loud i wouldnt worry about it. Just like Former said, drive it til it dies.
wow, no resepct for the winter beater, lol the poor thing is such a pice, what a pain having pistons. Anyway well I know they all tick but I don;t think they all knock. I mean the valves tick like crazyy to. I tried the brromstick thing and sounds are louder at oil pan, I gues sit is a rod or main bearing. ANyways, I think I ill just see hwo long it will last and go from there, lol
thanks guys
thanks guys
Well its ur "beater" for a reason. Run it into the ground! Oh and good luck I hope it doesn't break when u need it most cuz those things always seem to happen. Well maybe they just happen to me...
