ported wastegate question

First off I'd like to say I've been reading several threads on here about ported wastegates to get rid of boost creep, with that out of the way and after several pics that I'd looked at I wanted to try and do the job myself but got to thinking what if I screw up major and am out of a wastegate. So to get the the point I started calling shops (pettit rx7store.net and finally atkins to if they had one or a stock wastegate lying around and what I got was an atitude problem from like your a stupid kid, stop calling. Atkins told me (after going through the dumb kid scenario again) said this was unreliable modification. this is what made write this thread. I have talked to several ppl that have this done and it helped with the boost creep. so now I'm puzzled why would they tell me that? please don't anyone go into flaming, just want some info on this topic.

I don't see how you can screw it up, as long as you put everything back together properly. All you do is bore out the wastegate hole until the flapper door barely covers it. Pettit probably said it was an unreliable modification because they think it is an unreliable way of getting rid of boost creep with full exhaust, and they don't want to have the blame placed on them if you blow your engine because you thought your boost was controlled by the porting alone.

My wastegate if ported, and with a dp/mp/cb, i was fine in 1st and 2nd gear, but above about 6500 rpm in 3rd and above, it would creep to about 12 psi, which was fine for me because i don't have the stock ECU.

How much boost do you plan to run? What mods do you have?

I have a full exhaust done with no cats, stage 2 gotham racing engine with power fc. Right now the boost creep goes up to 15 psi. have a new fuel system coming next week.

Also, the wastegate isn't something external that you buy and port - the hole that you port out is an integral part of the turbine housing. It's VERY easy to do, really - the hard part is just getting the turbos off the car and back on again. There's not much finesse to the process.

It will DEFINITELY help your problem. The more volume you can bleed out of the wastegate, the better you can control boost, period. You will need a good boost controller to get everything kosher, of course.
