To port or not to port.. ??? and why I ask..

Ok let me give you some background first.

I blew my motor in my FD3S.
I shopped around to find a shop for
a new motor and some performance upgrades.
IE: porting a reman.

I called severalreputable places and tuners and was suprisedto hear the responses I got. (I won't name any tuners or shops).

All the people I spoke with said basically the same thing.
They asked what my plans were..
I told them I gonna keep the stock twins for now.
and maybe down the road, I"ll go single turbo.

I was told, that if I was gonna keep the Twin turbo
set up, upgraded or non seq that Porting was not neccesaryand that the $$ to spend on the Porting would be better spent on other things. Porting they said at the most would only give maybe 15hp only on the High End. And tht wouldn't justify getting a ported
motor..

I was also told that FD's ran 10's and 11's on NON
ported motors, stock twins and injectors.. And that
porting really[ isn't the holy grail for power or speed.

So the question is.. Should I or SHOULD I NOT port
a Reman motor??? and WHY???

For the guys that do have STREET PORTS and etc.
are you happy with it?? was it that noticable in
power speed or response??

i would think porting the 13b would play a great roll in power. from what ive read a street ported motor with adding a full exhaust (i.e. dp, mp, cb) would put down greater power than a stock port 13b would. but as you said it would probably end up being only 15 more hp on the top end more than a stock non ported engine. also do a search for what your looking for, trust me it helps.

i have a ported motor on the stock twins, but its easily worth the money, over here it cost about £300 for it to be ported while it was being rebuilt, its hardly a fortune, and saves u having to have the engine stripped later to have it done.

Also, i was told that having your motor ported gave power throughtout the entire powerband not just top end, i.e. more low end power which is good

I am interested in this myself...I remember reading in the Racing Beat catalogue that street porting will increase power by c. 20% mainly in the higher rpm with a slight loss in torque in the low range, and also they add manages to keep a steady idle. So I ask you guys who have done it

1. Have you had idle trouble
2. Do you feel the loss of low end torque
3. Are there any effects to shortening the life of the motor ?

Oh yea I forgot to mention, also..

That another reason I'm asking about porting is
because, a reman motor comes with a 12 month
some with unlimited mile WARRANTY..

and if you PORT it.. you VOID the warranty..

SO thats my dilema:

get a port job that i said I was always gonna get and
void the warranty, and risk blowing another motor
for minimal gains..
-or-
Don't get a port job, save some $$, get a warrantty.
sleep easy at night.. But always feel that I am not
getting as much POWER as I could be getting..

Hmmmm decisions decisions...

So anyone out there get a new reman motor and
got it ported and a week later BLEW it????
IF so What did you do??? besides Shat yourself??

I don't know anything about porting, but I do know that most of the shops offer a one year warranty. Call gotham or rp (gothamracing.com, or rx7.com) or others.

Non ported motor with stock twins and stock injectors running 10's or 11's? On a good day one might see 11's. However, the only cars I've seen on stock twins make an 11 second pass have had ported engines.

If you are going to keep the stock twins and want more power, porting is the way to get it. It's true that it's only good for only so many HP (15-30wrhp). However, from 330rwhp to 360rwhp can be a big difference.

The best way to make big power with the stock ports is to throw on a single turbo (search for "ErnieT" running a KKK turbo on a stock reman making 10 second passes). As I said above, if you are keeping the stock twins the best way to make additional power is by porting. You don't have to get crazy and get a bridge port, a nice streetport will give you some additional kick in the butt dyno.
