Poll: Sleek vs. Sleepy
 

hi all;

im at a x-roads with trying to decide what route to take on my headlights..
i was one click away from purchasing the evo-r sleek hid lights but i remembered seeing some sleepy eyed hid's and i canceled the purchase:(

i truly love how both setups look and would compliment my car. so i wanted to know you guys opinions.

and i know its my car, my taste yada yada yada

hypothetically speaking;

they all had the same specs, looked amazing on my setup and were readily available.

and if so, what kit would you go with??

If you can get ahold of the r-magic, or replica sleek i would do it, other than that i would not run any sleek lights. just my personal opinion.

Only solution I've come to so far, is to buy another fd and then I can have both :icon_tup:

There are other factors you need to consider.

Sleepy:
You need to actually change your headlights so you can get an optimum beam pattern with the new height. Otherwise = :gayboy: BTW I also find it extrmely gay when its noon and guys are driving around with their headlights popped up because they want to show off the sleepy look. Defeats the whole purpose of the pop up as they are meant to hidden during the day.

From what people say they fit like crap and the lighting is terrible. So again you have to upgrade the headlights. But they sure look nice.



I think for most of us it was a tough decison to go to a sleek set up. At least it was for me but my thinking process was like this:

I love the popups when they are down. When they are up they completely ruin the car for me, as it reminds me of a frog. HATED the lighting. I had also had my car for about 8 years (at the time) so it was time for a make over and I felt that my sleeks would give my car an updated look (<---that was what made up my mind), plus it would give me a chance to upgrade the lighting.

Now if you don't feel the same about a "modern look" I saw stay popup and go sleepy with better lighting. :)

The only sleek kits that look good (to me) are the expensive ones...Like re-a or r-magic.

Personally I prefer pop-ups :)

Stock + Knightsports = Your lights will pop up way too far and there will be a huge gap between the lights and your hood.

If you're going the KS route, you need a sleepy-eye controller. ;)

To my knowledge, no one makes a sleepy, hid projector kit? If they did they would be rich! (well, maybe a bit of an exaggeration). There was very recently a post where someone fabbed their own and it was exactly what we need for our cars!

If it has to be any of those bad choices you HAVE to do the Knightsports dual projector style low profile pop-ups, because its the only proper one.

Gordon's Knightsport kit is the only sleepy kit on the market. It is high quality and looks great. It does not require a pivot controller and comes with everything you need to install the lights. It is also very OEM looking. Cost? About $1,800. Got a chance to see it in person last weekend.

Unfortunately for me, the light output is not desirable in the sense that the HID pattern does not have proper cutoff. What I mean by this is HID bulbs need some sort of way to keep the light from splashing all over the road and blinding incoming drivers. The best way to achieve this is to use projector lenses with a cutoff built into them, much like any OEM headlight from BMW, Mercedes, etc. Check out the lens and look for a line half way up and this is cutoff. Not all projector lenses have this so be careful (especially with eBay). Some other bulbs offer a "cap" on the top of them and this seems to work also so it is possible the Knightsport kit can be retrofitted with these to get the proper look.

If I get motivated, I am going to make my own kit by using a pivot controller (wired into the lights so it automatically adjusts the height with you turn the lights on), a set of OEM projector lenses sourced from eBay, a HID light kit for the low beams, and regular halogens for the high beams. As pointed out above, this can be done with some work but I will need to outsource the fiberglass bezel to someone else as I can't do this.

Apparently, the guy who made that kit (an RX-7 Club vendor, BTW) used the KS kit as a template. He recommends a pivot controller for his kit, so I figured that you'd need it for the real KS lights as well.

Goron told me that the KS kit comes with motors so you don't need the pivot controller. Went to evo-r.net's website and you can't click on the kit so I don't know if it is available.

If the KS came with motors, then I'll bet they shortened arms in the pop-ups.

Whatever the case, I'll update when my evo-r kit comes in the mail...and HOPEFULLY not start a "WTB: sleepy eye controller" thread.

The KS kit does NOT come with motors. It uses the stock headlight motors with a different arm (which is what sets the height).

lol, so what you're saying is that the arms in the pop -ups have been shortened...? That's a great idea! :lol:

There's also a how-to on modifying the stock motors to open only as much as you need. I may try that, rather than spending $100+ on the Pivot controller.
