Plastic tank above the fuel tank?
Hi everyone,
I have a question about the plastic tank that sits on top of the fuel tank.
My FD came with a modified fuel system when I bought it but was one of the areas that needed to be addressed to get the car to its full potential.
Anyway, I dropped the tank and installed dual Bosh 044’s but need to know what this plastic tank is. I need to know if there is a proper way to decommission or recommission this tank as I do not believe that it is being handled correctly.
I am pretty positive that it is part of the factory return system but I am taking a guess that it might expel fumes also. Any help would be appreciated and I already did try to search and came up with nothing. Here is a picture.

The tank in the picture is called the Separator. It's not the charcoal canister but the Separator is plumbed to it and both are part of the Fuel Evap system.
Looks like your separator was disconnected from the charcoal tank and the other vapor check valve. I would take care this is done correctly because fuel fumes are no joke.
This stuff is covered in the FSM page F-129.
