Pics of my engine all disassembled (not 56K friendly)

here is one of the cracked APEX seals. It went through and killed my turbo. another apex seal chipped the corner off.

if you look careful you can see the grooves cause by the apex seal.

My interior, just wanted to show how clean my car is for 162K

here is what 162K mile original OEM turbos look like. its hard to see but there is a crack in the housing. other than that they were amazingly good except when the apex killed my primary.

this pic is very interesting, I circled parts where there is corrosion in my engine. It was white growth that was all over the metal. Kinda strange.

more engine stuff

time for the rats nest!!
all this crap on this table is from my Rx-7. You got to love Mazda for engineering this!!!

Good luck on the rebuild...

BTW,

what kind of coolant where you running? Any additives like Water wetter? When was the last time you flushed and changed the coolant? And what did the mechanic say the build up was caused by?

I had used watter wetter in the past. He told me that its hard to tell, but his guess was coolant issues, running too hot, etc.

its amazing cause from the time I bought the car just over a year ago, I probably had a coolant flush every month. Not by choice, but my cooling system was a nightmare. My car ran super hot the first 8 months I had it, I wasn't aware I was running on 1 fan. So it may have been like that for years from the original owner, I dunno. He *DID* overheat the original engine at 110, when this reman was installed.

its a 94, the 162K is on the original turbos. I'm on the 3rd engine now. This engine went out around 52Kmiles, the first about 110K.

the 3rd time is the charm.

I installed them myself about 1 year go. You can search for a writeup if you want. search for my name and Leatherseats.com.

Thanks!

the front housing was damaged really bad, but rick replaces both housings standard with all rebuilds.

WHAT KIND OF COOLANT ARE YOU USING EXACTLY? AND I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE, BUT WHEN I START MY CAR MY WATER TEMP GOES UP JUST BELOW THE 9O'CLOCK POSITION, AND WHEN I TURN IT OFF IT GOES BACK DOWN, BUT IT HAS NEVER CHANGED EXCEPT FOR THOSE TWO TIMES, DO YOU GUYS THINK IT'S BROKE?

its a non linear gauge and should never move. They did that for the same reason they did not put a boost gauge in the car. everyone would freak out at the high temps, etc.

as long as it stays at the half way mark dont worry, but you should get a water temp gauge, later.

Every engine I've taken apart has some white crud in the cooling passages... it's hard to tell how much you have from the pics, but some is always going to be there I think.

162k on the original turbos? That doesn't sound right at all. You sure about that?
Knock em apart and look at the primary turbine housing too, if it's not cracked all to hell I'll be surprised.

Man, I'll be honest I have NEVER seen turbine manifolds that look that good on a set of twins with more than 50K miles. My manifolds looked like someone took a jack hammer to the center section (where your small crack is) and it only had 40K miles on it. I think those were replaced with a engine at one point and the owner just didnt know what all they were doing. The heat from the rotory exhaust just kills the manifolds

The first time I pulled my turbos off they had about 30K miles on them and they looked about like yours do.

BTW - I agree with Wargasm, I've seen that white crap in tons of engines, I think the engine naturally runs so hot it breaks down the coolant.

Yea I'm sure about the turbo's. You do know that there are 2 cracks? the standard crack that doesn't matter, but on the 2ndary turbo between where the flapper goes down there is a crack that is bigger than I would like.

BTW here was the car-fax report. I told you the guy drove it across the country alot and never took above 4K rpm or so. It was mostly highway miles.

The CARFAX database contains a total of 10 vehicle history records on this 1994 MAZDA RX7

What would Carfax tell you about your turbos??? I was just saying that maybe during one of the other rebuilds the turbos were replaced cause they were more than likely bad from apex seal damage, and the owner might not have even known. You know how so many people are just like "fix it and call me when its done".

But anyway, its no big deal and doesnt matter, I was basically just saying that the manifolds look outstanding. I cant see the other crack in the pic (kinda blurry) but as long as its not going past a gasket it should be ok.

it will tell me nothing, but you can see He bought the car in CA, drove to NC, back to CA, then back to NC, etc. Its all highway miles. Thats why the clutch lived past 140K.

well, the crack is starting to show light toward the bottom. It has not gone through completely, but it looks bad to me. I have the option of used turbos or Rick can replace the cartridge in the primary turbo.

Thanks.
