Pics of my blown motor

One apex seal to break it all, and in the darkness I weep:
as you can see, this is a 2 peice apex seal that was turned into a 3 peice.

Where Is the third peice? Nobody knows, but it sure decided to write a farewell note on my housing. By looking at it I think Pineapple racing gave me a new one, now a new peice of scrap

Oh, well, look at that! This apex seal didn't really want to go, so it felt the need to kiss my rotor goodbye

A wall of car parts

She detonated with no warning. 11:1 AF ratio on the meter, conservative timing, trailing plugs were also disabled, and she spat an apex seal. I'm wondering if I heard detonation, or the apex seal just letting go from a previous ping from an ignition problem that I fixed 3 weeks ago. It only hit 75 on the PFC commander.

I havent even checked to see if my turbos are ok either. *sigh* Nows a time to do a full restoration job on the car.

yup, you are correct. If I was to do an LSx I would get one from Redline Performance, but they start at around 10k.

ill have to port this one, anyone know where to get some templates?

Sounds like something from lord of the rings: "One apex seal to break it all, and in the darkness I weep"

A few thoughts:

(1) You definitely need to trace down why it blew. Fuel filter? Injector? Fuel Diffusers? Wiring harness problem? If you are running a PFC, resistors?

(2) Water injection is a lifesaver, look into it.

(3) Every time a v8 goes into an rx-7, a kitten dies.

91 octane, I was running 12psi, and I just turned on water injection the minute before I went out. I hadnt been running it for a while.

Is that because the damage isnt in the dish? Its a nice gouge, id wonder if it could create a hot spot and pre ignite.

Deliberate thread jack: you owe us more "detailed" pics of your avatar Back on topic: hey dude, I live in San Berardino, right up the road from you. What's up with your luck/setup? It sucks to hear your motor die but **** man, engines don't die for no reason at all.... 11:1 A/F seems kind of aggressive on 12 psi IMHO. Rebuild that focker and have it tuned. Water injection? What are your power goals again..? You don't need that for a "reasonable" street car IMHO.

The water injection came with the car. Right now i dont even want to think about the engine, im stripping the whole car down to bare metal and am doing a complete restoration. I'll be down for a while.

I was diagnosing an ignition problem. 12psi was causing the spark to blow out and there was a few occasions that the trailings would fire but not the leading, causing a single ping. I bought an apex twin power, that fixed the problem. I left them disabled to make sure everything was good, which they were. I was going to turn them back on that day or the next.

If that's the only scrap on the housing, your housing should easily be re-usable. The main thing is if the gaulges are "NOT" on the compression side. The one you have can easily be smoothed out. Check out the housing I re-used on my S5 rebuild. Keep in mind that I rebuilt with RA seals and the engine now has 6k on it and has very strong compression.

Oh, well, look at that! This apex seal didn't really want to go, so it felt the need to kiss my rotor goodbye

Your rotor is far from gone. The main thing is that your seal grooves are unaffected and still within spec. That small dimple is too small to worry about changing your compression or worrying about hot spots. You avoid hot spots by keeping carbon build-up down. You would be surprised at what can actually be re-used and still provide excellent service life.
