First of all, awsome looking FD, great color!

I just was wondering how much the hood set you back, and did you say it weighs in at 12 lbs? Thanks.

gorgeous car, and i especially love the paint color. makes me wish i got a silver car or some other color other than cym so i could repaint it to a nice custom color like your's. as much as everyone likes to hate on the ever-popular cwest kit or the gt wing, i personally like them both (no disrespect to anyone who doesn't). aesthetics are aesthetics and what matters is whatever tickles your pickle. fantabulous! *thumbsup*

everyone else, chillax about the whole spoiled or not spoiled thing. i'm pretty sure lzyassmofo defended himself adequately and besides, fd3boost said he was just giving the guy a hard time. if he was really adamant about it, he would've gone on and on about it but he didn't. relax, guys, and enjoy the pretty carbonite car.

would you be able to find/figure out what model or brand that carbon fiber hood you have on right now is? it's the best hood i've seen so far.

Although there is something about having all that downforce on a few 5 inch mounts that I am uneasy about. If you want weight in the rear end throw some bags-o-sand back there!
I love aerodynamic discussions. Hehe, lzyassmofo, love the car by the way, looks like quite a lot of time went into it, so get to work under the hood and you'll be one of the FD greats!

First of all, you can acheive downforce without adding drag, it's called ground effects. This isn't side skirts guys and not many street cars are equipped with this, but hey, the generic term "downforce" was used (so it's gonna be technical, skip this post if not interested or offended). Ground effects work by taking the air that is displaced under the car, and increasing the volume under the car as the air is displaced further towards the back of the car. Everyone remembers PV=nRT (j/k, I'm sure all of y'all are gonna give me that "someone paid attention in Physics class") so when volume is increased, naturally, pressure on the underside of the car decreases and thus the difference in pressures on the top and bottom of the car increases, the outcome: more downforce with equal, sometimes less drag. The diffusers you see from Mazdaspeed and some other company are aesthetic and do nothing to produce this effect for the FD (flat bottom and lower ground clearance would be necessary). If you ever get a chance to look at some prototype LMP900s, Formula 1, Formula Atlantics, CART, you'll notice they have large tunnels under the car that ends in a diffuser, hell even Formula Continentals have diffusers... If anyone's still reading and interested, go back and look at some vintage Formula 1 cars to see what's been done with ground effects. There was even a car with a vacuum cleaner mounted to the underbody, which was quickly outlawed because it did such a good job of reducing underbody pressure. Also, why would you put a rear wing on a car that has natural lift on the front of the car when attempting a top speed run. You would want to trim the car out the best you can on the rear and put just enough front wing or downfoce to keep the car on the ground, we've all seen the "salt flat flips". (the 5 inch mounts have load placed in compression, so flex should not be an issue if properly installed, look at a Formula 1 car wing upright and keep in mind they produce insane amounts of load on the back of the car.)

"The whole point of a WING or SPOILER is to add DOWNFORCE WHITH OUT ANY SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT! ie put 3000# force on the tires when the car only weighs 2000# and you can generate 1.5 gs accel. insted of 1.0g without the wing. Wings w/ a lot of downforce (and hence drag) are much more usefull on a road course at 100mph than when trying for 200mph+ in a straight line where you can't afford the DRAG penalty and don't need to generate more than 1g of acceleration."

Lateral acceleration is all in suspension geomety, front/rear balance, center of mass(gravity), roll rate, slip angle, etc..., however your basic idea of increased tire load creating greater friction (grip) is correct. But for arguement's sake, if a 2000lb car has 1000lb rear downfoce, effectively the car weighs 3000lb and will react the same way. Putting a "GT" wing on the back of an FD is basically for looks. The air that goes over the FD is fairly dirty and putting a wing back there will generate SOME downforce, but nowhere near 1000lbs!!!!! That number was just misleading. The amount of force put on the car, whatever it may be, is put on the rear of the car, and will change the handling characteristics of a car (oversteer/understeer/wheelspin). So it's incorrect to say adding that wing will produce 1.5g to 1.0g... You're likely to increase understeer nearly linearly (lb to pissed off driver) and I don't see many front wings (splitters) for street FDs out there (mainly cause they're ugly).
Wings produce downforce and increase drag, period, so that is correct. If done properly, you can take 850hp, hit 200mph in a straightaway, slow to 60 in a little over 100 feet, turn in with around 4gs of lateral accel (6gs in one particular turn), all while having around .75 coefficient of drag. The point in all this bull$hit is that GT wings on an FD are purely cosmetic, so please don't bring aerodynamics into the picture because that's on the same level as hondas that slam their cars, destroy camber/caster, get progressive springs and say "I improved the handling by..."

Lzyassmofo, sorry to take away from your thread, you do have a sweet *** car! Take more pics and post them when you get time! Don't be a stranger and keep us posted on some of those underhood projects.

Richard

Wow RoadRacing7! That was deffinately in depth... I was only referring the GT wings in my comment but you deffinately hit the nail on the head. Unlike popular belief I did pay attention in physics, too. Thanks for all the info that was an amazing post.
Thanks
Catlin
