PFS Intake and SMIC install thoughts and questions

Sooooo, yesterday I removed the intake, the duct for the IC, the IC and other various parts to install the new intake and IC. This is what I learned:
1. Someone left a rubber bungee cord under the AC dryer and battery tray, WTF???
2. The PFS SMIC was designed to be used with the stock AST, I'm going to have to fab up some sort of adapter and redo a coolant line or two. I really don't want to relocate the AST.
3. The hoses off the airpump, CRV, and the ACV are 1" hoses, the PFS intake ports are 7/8".
4. Only the turbo intake hoses in the PFS intake box are filtered, WTF????
5. I've taken apart the intake so many times, I could have re-assembled everything in my sleep. In fact, I think I was.
6. Moving the AC dryer without kinking the AC lines was alot easier that I thought.
7. QuickSteel apoxy is some really good stuff though I'm not sure if it's as good as JB Weld. Walmart was out of the JB so I got the QS.

Q1: Shouldn't the airpump, CRV, and the ACV receive filtered air?
Q2: Does the CRV intake and expel air?
Q3: If the above components don't need filtered air, can I clamp the hoses onto to the intake box nipples(unlikely) or do I need to find reducers.
Q4: Mahjik recommended using a longer coupler between the intake box and the IC duct. I checked around online but all I've found so far are 3 inch long couplers and 12 inch hoses. Anyone know of a place that sells 4-5 inch couplers? I suppose I could cut the 12 inch hose to size, but it's not cheap

Thanks guys. I searched the forum(that's where I found Mahjik's suggestion) for more info, but there didn't seem to be alot about the PFS intake installation-wise. Although I didn't get anything installed yesterday, it was still fun and yet another learning experience.

If i understand correctly, you're talking about the three little hoses that fit onto the top of the intake box. Two of these go to the primary and secondary turbo charge relief valves (crv) which, if i'm not mistaken, are simply blow off valves for the turbos and only expel air, not ingest it (air only flows out). I think. As for the air pump, i don't believe it's crucial for it to have filtered air as it only gets burned up in the catalytic converter. Also the location of these hoses is at the very top of the box, which is a fairly clean environment to begin with. I took mine apart this week to clean the filter (i have the PFS intake and IC as well) and aside from a random leaf, it was actually very clean in there after about 20k mi of use.

You could always go down to your local autozone or something and get a breather that is used on the valve covers of V8s and stick it at the end of each hose if you're worried about filtration. Should fit fine.

Like i said, i have the same setup and the stock hoses clamp very snugly onto the intake box nipples. Just go get some cheap hose clamps from a hardware or auto store and they won't be going anywhere.

I've had the same problem with finding longer couplers. I finally just had to order a 12" piece to cut down to size. But i haven't had any problems with that connection. The 3" piece that i have works fine. It doesn't have to be super tight...it's not like it sees a whole lot of pressure there...not like the intake piping after the turbos. As long as it doesn't fall off you should be fine.

Where did you find that suggestion Mahjik made? I'm curious to his reasons. He usually knows what he's talking about...

Doh! Actually it was Rynberg that said it:

Sorry Rynberg!

Yeah, I'm leaning towards getting the 12" hose and cutting it to size and getting the breather filters. I just thought it was odd that the 3 nipples on the intake weren't filtered. I just now took some spare hoses and they actually seemed to fit ok the intake box..... That might work out. Thanks!

Mine worked ok with a 3-inch coupler, it was just finicky on placement. You'll have to just pull the front end of the box over to the driver's side as needed.

Here's how my AST is mounted....it's held up for over 2 years with several track events with zero issues. You just have to make sure the coolant line will not contact the belts/pullies.

You can search using my username and PFS for more info.....

WOW!! Thanks Rynberg, that's awesome!

audiobot7 and Sgtblue, I stripped the red paint off had my PFS IC powder coated silver. I've seen some guys on the forum paint them other colors and saw one that was polished, very nice.
