When I bought a short shifter from rx7 store, the package came shipped from Pettit Racing!!?? It was a completely different shifter from the stocker. The shift was actually reduced by about half a throw.

I have the old style Pettit shifter and it is great. Very precise and not notchy. Too bad to see what they are selling as the "new" shifter.

I wonder what the thought process is with these new 'short' shifters.....

After looking at the pic of the RE one posted on page one, it to looks like it was just cut at the top. If you look at the fulcrum point it looks like the stock shifter on the left..

BTW... I have the original Pettit SS and have no issues at all..

Just gonna chime in since this thread has been resurrected.

I used to have an authentic B&M short shifter, but it eventually got sloppy. Now I have a B&M clone that is steel instead of aluminum. I got it off eBay for like $20 shipped. I know a lot of people hate on "eBay parts" but I've had great experience with this new shifter.

It's definitely a true short shifter - the lower part of the lever is much longer than OEM.

Been using it for about 20k miles now and it still has yet to get sloppy. Not bad for $20 IMO...

How do you keep the shift boot "propped up" the shifter shaft? mind taking a picture of your console?

Mine actually stays right up at the base of the shift **** on its own.

I supposed you could always cut a small piece of rubber hose and then push it down the shifter handle to the point where you want the boot to sit.

I had the old B&M shifter (hated it) but the way I kept the boot up with a zip tie between an o-ring and a rubber groumet.

Reading Theorie's positive experience, I think I'll give the ebay short shifter a shot. I can always go back to stock if I don't like it.

Posting ebay links is probably not allowed so my question is when I search for RX7 short shifter in ebay there are two el cheapo versions. One is silver (aluminum) $24.99 and the other one is black, same as in the pics Theorie posted for $39.99 and it is steel.

Should I go for the steel or the aluminum? What is the genuine B&M made of?

I'm a little amused that Pettit is catching such flack for this, when it's exactly what RE Amemiya has been selling for years (probably for even more money). I get the disappointment, but how come nobody is calling Japan?
