passing emissions test without air pump

Is there any way to pass emissions tests with a straight through exhaust? So no air pump, empty precat and midpipe. Or will I need a high flow cat?

no way... you'll need a cat (highflow or stock) and an airpump.

I passed (barely) with a stainless core cat and no air pump, single turbo and PFC.

Every time I go through emissions it's a 50:50 chance that I'll have to do the dyno test or the idle test. This time happened to be the idle test. I don't know if I would have passed the dyno test though.

We just have an idle test which measures CO.
So no chance of passing with air pump removed?
With the PFC, is it possible to add a setting with low emission?

I did it... really it was just an experiment, I hooked up a scuba tank in the trunk with a hose going my O2 bung on the midpipe, with the midpipe halfway disconnected from the downpipe. The guy was like "man, rotarys are ******* loud and have a weird emission pattern huh" "uhhh...yeah... gotta go!"

You almost convinced me to disconnect my down pipe a little and put a scuba tank in the back and connect it to the exhaust to help....... ahaha.. Did it actually Help.. I mean it is clean air or whatever you put in there so it helps it should at least right?? and whats the point of taking off the air pump other than making the engine bay cleaner and a little more room? power increase??

This thread got me thinking, how do people in states where they have smog **** laws get past smog testing with a single turbo and all the other junk? I mean, you'd fail visual as soon as the guy opened the hood, and chances are you'll fail the dyno test too. Forgive my ignorance, but in CA, especially Socal, you can't go anywhere without cops chasing you down if you own a FD. I got pulled over in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway and the cop asked me to pop my hood and questioned me about my intercooler pipes and that's all my car had at that point along with other reliability mods! Now how do you get around **** like that when you have a bigass honking turbo and FMIC? Or do you all just have relatives or friends that run smog shops?

where the hell do you live in socal? ive owned my FD for 6 years here and ive been pulled over a total of 3 times, (knocks on wood) never once was i asked to pop the hood. car doesnt look stock at all and i definatly dont drive like a puss. maybe this is more common with the younger owners....

heres a link to my smog results with mods, stock main cat and no airpump:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=491687

visual inspection in socal isnt too tough to pass. a good percentage of the testers (at least the hispanic ones) dont care as long as it will pass the emmisions part.

Good luck.. I don't know where he found that moron, but an exhaust leak is an automatic failure in most tests and I think most testers would notice.

If you truly have NO visual test, and NO dyno test... just an idle sniff... then you MIGHT be able to install a main cat and get away with it, but you ain't passing squat with an open exhaust unless you're running pure alcohol which I would recommend, and most sniff computers would notice.
