passed emissions with no air pump

Just passed emissions in Wilmington DE this afternoon without my air pump. It was dying and finally died right before I went into the station. Had the cat pretty hot. My readings/legal limit were: HC idle 214/220ppm, HC 2200rpm 201/220ppm, CO idle 0.31/1.20 %, CO 2200rpm 0.60/1.20 % , CO + CO2 idle 13.64 %, CO +CO2 2200rpm 14.08 %.

When I first looked at the analyzer I was around the 330ppm range for HC, air pump clicked on real quick and it changed drastically to 13ppm, then clicked back off. The guy was real cool and helped me pass because he knew a little about 7's in general. My car was failing pretty much but he made it pass, no bribes, no nothing. Awesome guy, really polite, good experience.

Also there was some dumbass white dude with a shaved head that was looking under my hood and saying dumb stuff like "I ain't never seen nothin like that, this can't be legal, blah blah blah" pretty much hatin' on the FD. The cool guy immediately told him to shut his f*cking mouth and passed me and I was out!

Man, I got encouraged when I saw this, but those numbers would fail in CA.

Our legal limits are (15mph/25mph):

HC: 88/53
CO: .52/.50
NO: 704/738

Looks like the air pump will have to be working to pass in Cali.

I can't say for sure but I thought someone had hooked up an electrical air pump to the 12v system and was running it inside the car to the cat.

Anyone else tried this?

it should just hook it up to the stock air pump wires with a relay and you're good to go. dont hook it up right to the cat it doesnt work well enough

That electric air pump comes from a Corvette, it's smaller and lighter than our belt-driven pump. I think they had them as early as the C4 styles, but I could be wrong.

I have. The GM pumps are designed to work for around 40 seconds when he car starts then they shut off. I burned two of them out trying to run them off the stock airpump clutch signal (which runs the pump whenever the car is below 3000rpms). The first pump lasted about 8minutes the other 25minutes. They cost around $150 new from the dealer and $40 used.

I guess to pass if everything else is in working order $40 isn't that bad?

Any idea why they were burning up? Just were not made to be run that long?

As others with no emissions/cat etc, I am very interested in this as well.

I have been curious about the electric pump idea. CCarlisi, was the input on the cat or line blocked or restricted to cause the pump to work too hard?

How about matching Corvette Cat to the pump? It is GM, so something will be screwy.

The RX-8 pump also runs for about 20 sec. when the car starts and then shuts off. The 12 V cable that runs to it is huge!
