Paint would probably be the last thing on my list of mods for weight savings. Even if you could save 5lbs with a different color/mix, what does that buy you? I mean, you could shorten all of your fuel/coolant/oil/air hoses to save some pounds while we're at it.

Start taking weight out of your FD while trying to keep it streetable (ie full interior, glass, AC) and discover very quickly how good a job Mazda did with keeping weight down on the car. Once the obvious stuff is done, weight reduction becomes a very expensive game so why not take the time to keep 20lbs of unnecessary weight out of the car?

FAA requires airliners to be painted as a corrosion protection procedure. American Airlines has famously not painted their planes for decades now. When they calulated (1) the weight of the paint, (2) the labor and material costs to paint a plane, and (3) the ease at which skin inspections could be done without stripping the old paint and repainting, it was much much cheaper to pay the FAA fine for not painting the planes. This info came from AA's maintenance office.

AA planes were not painted but they still coated the aluminum to prevent oxidation. Raw aluminum does not shine but develops a white oxidized power.

OEM paint will be lighter than most new paint jobs.

The guys in the factory have it down to the dollar sign of finding the least amount of paint materials they can put on a car to keep their production costs down.
