My fans sound like rattling ****. Umm the car on the freeway today got to 105 degrees celcius in about 80 degree weather. The fans don't even cool properly. My cooling system seems all screwed up. I want to think that there is a leak somewhere but my filler neck is always full and there aren't any puddles on the ground. Anybody know what I might be experiencing?
BTW, the search button wasn't working

first u must think of everything that involves the cooling system, radiator, coolant reservoir, ast, hoses in car heater core and hoses to that as well. if u are gettign no leaks like u say, check to see if your cooling system is realyl without air pockets(u said u checked it, just do it again, and top it off if u have to when teh car is cold), the car shoudltn overheat while crusing in any type of weather really. check to see if u can still see your radiator, if its all blocked up with road debris it might not get enouf air to pass thru it to cool the engine, another thing that can make u overheat is running advanced timing. check all those see if anythign is worng. if nothign is worng it coudl be your motor that is makign the car over heat. rare but can happen

oh and I forgot to ask...if one of the motors on the fans is burnt out, would it make a ticking/rattling sound or would it just not spin and make no noise? I'm guessing the car is getting hot because the fans aren't spinning well
The coolant smell you have when you turn on your heater... does that go away when you put the heater to re-circulate instead of fresh air? If so, then you might have a "pinhole" leak in your system, somewhere in the engine bay. How old are the hoses? Especially the ones on the turbos and the upper radiator ? These can develop a leak that only shows up when the system is HOT and expanded. As soon as you turn off the car, the coolant starts to cool, and the leak stops. Drive you nutty! You will find that your coolant levels at the filler neck and AST are full, but you should see a steady drop in the overflow level. Eventually this wil lead to drops in the rest of the system. Ask me how I know...
The only solution for me was to replace all the coolant lines. THAT solved the pinhole problem. Until I did that, my system wouldn't cool properly, the fans kept coming on all the time, and couldn't really deal very well with the heat. Note that if you drive with your lights on, this will turn the fans on sooner, reducing the heat load the system has to deal with.
That's my $0.02

thanks for the reply bro, yeah worst part is my fans don't work too well either...i think it is a pin hole leak indeed...i gotta find some time to check it out. hoses got 60k on them, i was waiting to change them all with the radiator next summer...but i might have to do this quickly. Thanks everyone

uhh if the temps were fine before and after thermostat they go up someone put the thermostat the wrong way it, u have to flip it 180 deg. teh coolant smell is not good either, check to seee if comes on at all times or only when teh rec. button i soff liek someone already has mentioned. and get new fans, get stock ones, they are better and fit better then most aftermarket ones
Check to make sure the fans spin first.DUH! Ive actually seen the bolt come off the fan and the fan was laying there appearing to be fine,so turn the key on(not the motor) and turn the ac on(this will make the fans both come on med. if they are in working order) just so you can see they are both functioning,if you look really hard you can see them both without removing anything.
If they both work I would suggest a pressure check on the coolant system, this is extremely important that the system is free of leaks and this is the only way to truely know.If it is not holding pressure try squeezing the hose to the overflow to make sure the pressure cap is not bleeding the pressure off.If this trick makes it start holding pressure then replace the cap, if not,you should be able to find it squirting from somewhere. The coolant pressure tester is a fairly expensive ($150+)tool but it is ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOLS YOU'LL OWN!!!!
