Overheat problem with 93 FD

Alright, I'm a newbie but I've heard there is an overheating problem with the 93 FD but they redid the programming in 94 to fix the problem, is this true? Second, does running an EMS, say AEM or some other type, does that fix the problem or can you fix the problem by doing that? I'm looking at possibly getting a 93 and I wanted to know if I can fix that problem with an EMS or just get a 94 that I'm also looking at. The 94 costs $2300 more though.

There were 3 recalls for the 93's. While one of them addressed an issue with the cooling system, it was not for "overheating".

As far as "overheating" all US models can suffer the same fate, if not properly maintained. Using an aftermarket ECU "can" allow you to control the radiator fans which you could then trigger them to come on at a lower temp setting than the stock ECU.

There are other means of triggering the fans without replacing the ECU. Try searching the forum using these keywords:

"fan mod"
"miata thermoswitch"

Cars only have an overheating problem if their owners don't realize the temps are going up.

COOLING is another issue. There are a few aftermarket radiators that can help with that, along with the mods Mahjik was talking about. The fan mod is a switch that you can turn on and off your fans manually, and the miata thermoswitch will turn the fans on at a lower temperature. Search the forum for more info on those.
