Question Opinions on Royal Purple's Purple Ice Radiator Super Coolant

I was given two bottles of this stuff and am thinking of putting it in my FD and my bud Alan's in preparation for the track event at MotorSport Ranch.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? Not sure how similar it is to Redline's Water Wetter....

i am running it in my fd. i have had it for about a month or two now. i was told to put the whole bottle in my car. i did notice a reduction in my underhood temps after i got done driving the car hard. i added the purple ice and a aluminum ast at the same time. it seems to work okay. but i need to buy another bottle because i am moving my fluidyne for my single turbo conversion. i was told that it didnt have water wetter in it. that it just prevents electro..."i cant spell"....and buildup in the cooling system allowing it to cool better.

Sounds like some good stuff, but have you checked out Evans NPG+? That stuff is great and is almost eliminates corrosion because it's waterless coolant and it has a boiling point of 375 degrees F @ ZERO psi! It's really nice stuff and would work well with upgraded radiator.

what do you mean you had lower underhood temps? was your water temp reading lower or does the engine bay "feel" cooler when you pop the hood after a hard run?

and if purple ice does cool more, where exactly does the heat go? let's say your radiator doesn't get any cooler because it's not getting any extra airflow through it. a certain amount of heat is radiated into your coolant passages. so once your radiator heat soaks to a certain equilibrium w/ the heat from the motor how does it get any cooler. i'd think something would have to carry away more heat from the radiator to make the whole cooling system cooler. hope that's not too confusing.

i noticed considerable difference under the hood. before purple ice, touch the hood and after a hard run and it was super hot. hot enough to fry a egg...well maybe not but that sucker is hot. now i dont care how hard i run that car i can always lay my hand on the hood just fine. also i see your point...where does the heat go...well i dont know i guess the additive just helps clean the inside on the tubes and whatnot allowing for better conduction. thereby allowing more heat to be dispursed."sorry i cant spell" i only had this stuff in my car for like a month before i decided to install my single turbo. so i cant go look at the temp gauge now.

yeah but heat from the combustion chamber conducts into the coolant passages by going down it's thermal gradient. if the purple ice allows for better conduction, that just means more heat is transfered to the coolant. the coolant will get hotter. now heat difference between the motor and the coolant is less. heat transfer will be reduced now because the thermal gradient is less. hence without expelling the heat from the coolant the engine will not run any cooler. everything would balance out in an equilibrium eventually and unless you can get more cooling through the radiator, i don't know how the engine can run cooler. essentially, the heat has to go somewhere and if it goes to the coolant, the coolant will be hotter. if the coolant is hotter the less net heat it can carry away from the motor.

Never used the purple Ice but run Problends Cools like ice in my road race car and it works like a charm, I ran the Evans NPG but was getting temps upwards of 265 degrees. Now I don't see past 225degrees. I do have an FMIC and this was my biggest obstacle in getting temps down. As soon as I changed to the Pro-Blend additive/Mixture the car stays way cool in the High summer temps on the road courses.

yes but if your engine is cooler from the coolant taking away the heat. then it dids it job and you can say that the engine 's coolant is hot now and cannot take away anymore heat. but it has already removed more heat than it did before you added the puple ice.

to help them out... yes it would make the engine bay cooler... only if, the rad was not running at full efficiency with the normal coolant... with the new coolant that apparently carries more heat away, the rad can now utilize its extra capacity(that was untapped previously because the coolant was the "bottleneck") and therefore reduce engine bay temps....

> I dont have any experience with this, just trying to help explain what apexKW is trying to get at...

Chiming in here just to agree with the NPG+ comments. After a new radiator and NPG+, even when I'm really getting on it, I've never seen anything above 90C (194F), for regular spirited street runs, it won't break 88C (~190F). Same in stop and go traffic - 87 or 88C.

Plus, you should be able to run easily with little or no power loss on NPG+ up in the 250F+ range. Better heat absorbtion, etc. Not that I'd encourage it if it could be helped.

I tried purple ice and I didn't notice a difference at all in my water temps (i have a greddy water temp guage). I heard that JB weld has an additive that makes a considerable difference though

royal purple man (rpm) at 7 stock said it helps to eliminate the tiny bubbles that form in the radiator. RPM also got pissed when i asked to compare rp with redline.

thanks silve rx7 that is what i was trying to point out. i just couldnt think of how to explain it. i guess royal purple is is just like npg, napacool or anyother additive. if you think it helps than use it. if you think it sucks then dont. i think it helps so i use it.

It is very similar to Redline's "Water Wetter." It helps the coolant exchange heat more easily. The Puple Ice bottle states that it should be used with a coolant mixture made up of less than 50% antifreeze. Antifreeze has poor heat exchange properties compared to straight water. These products work best when used with pure distilled water, but they recommend that in a street vehicle you should add at least a quart of antifreeze. This is what I do for Texas winters. In the summer I just use distilled water and Purple Ice.

Edit: Oh yeah, and don't put it in your Sno-cone, no matter how hot it is outside.
