Question In opinion, what stand-alone ecu is the best

I have intake, catback 3.5in, Blitz BOV, manual boost controller, boost gauge, and a hks downpipe, Im looking to pick up a stand alone ecu instead of buying an AFC and a MSD-2. Which stand alone ecu do you think is the best, under 1500. It does not have to be plug and play and I want it to be able to output the sensor readings to an external output, and has to be able to control ignition timing, fuel maps, and boost control. Also is there anyone running 10s that has a stand alone that can tell me how they like theirs? Thanks.

Who's tuning it? Ask who's going to tune it what they prefer. Most of the stand alone ECU's share similar functions and options.

KDR says it depends on your turbo setup. For twins they like the Power FC, however for singles they say the PFC is junk. So I'm switching to a Microtech right now. From what I've read I think I'm going to like the Microtech more.

Another key factor is which computer is your tuner most comfortable with.

As the others are saying, find a good, reputable tuner who understands your goals for the car and use what they recommend. ANY of the standalones can do all of what you are asking for. As far as initial user-friendliness, the PFC easily beats all of the others, as it comes with a decent map to start with. With the data-logit addition, it is easy to program and to log engine functions.

Has to be MoTeC. Though an 800 is pointess on a 2-rotor. Well of the commercially available ones anyway.

What makes Motec "the best"? It seems that it is always the "dream machine" but what does it possibly do that the others can't?

The things control injectors and control spark plugs. Why choose Motec over a PFC or Microtech or Autronic or Wolfe? Ease of use? More cells? Faster processor? Why is it "yum"?

Microtech LT8, also get the plug and play harness and you're set. But you deff need a tuner, that should be a major factor when deciding into a stand alone.

Faster processor, higher tuning resolution, more features, better quality components, etc... Ease of use isn't one of them!

Eh, I ran an AEM for a while on another car. I was pretty happy with it.

Works fine on other car's the Supra is one of them. However, I would not run one on an RX-7 if you paid me.

I use the Power FC and love it, but the way Steve Kan explained it to me, the more expensive solutions like Microtech and Motec ENABLE you to tune with greater resolution at each RPM and LOAD condition, so you can fine tune your car to an even GREATER degree. Anyone agree or disagree with this interpretation??

I'm tight on time but some of the things that are so nice about the Motec, just the M4 for example from my use of it. constant log of the most recent 20+ running minutes of every sensor always stored on the ECU (time depends on frequency of readings. I think 20 min is at 10 readings per second, you get the idea.

Autocalculation of AF based on the lambda you enter. You can set up your desired AF for a table, go to any cell on the table and enter what your logs show for AF at that cell and it will automatically adjust the fuel for that cell to reach that desired AF. Although I'm not willing to trust it, it will do closed loop both for idle and cruise as well as WOT (the part I'm nervous about).

It has a fair number of inputs such as with the M4 I'll now have all the normal stuff such as, IAT, Water temp, MAP, ECU temp, TPS, System voltage, Injector data, Lambda, 2 x EGT etc.etc.

The options you can add on to it are pretty impressive. It will do programmable traction control, you determine the acceptable slip percentages etc. It has telemetry options to broadcast live data to a base station, they provide computer maps of most US road race tracks and with some G sensor option (not planning on spending the money so I don't know all the details) it will actually plot your location on the track and synch everything in the log to it including all the braking, acceleration plus I assume lateral G load. Would be nice to see just how many G's you were pulling before you went off track in turn X or if you had just lifted the throttle before hand etc.

They constantly update the software that you can download for free.

I'm just scratching the surface on what it can do because of time but it is pretty darn impressive. It really does fit the phrase, "you get what you pay for" The down side is they aren't afraid to charge for it and the people able to set it up and tune it are pretty rare and not cheap either.

You dont need to be talking to us about what computer....you need to be talking to whoever will be tuning the car. Go with what they are most experienced with and what they like the best for your application. The computer is only a portion of getting the car to run right, the tuner is a larger portion. All of the computers will get your car to run good in the proper hands of a tuner. Go with what your tuner can tune.
