Ok so someone give me the skinny on the FDs
Im looking into buying an FD RX-7. Ive ran some searches, and I see both sides of the fence. I really dont know what to think. Should I buy an FD with a blown motor, and work from the ground up? I really wanted to put a 3 rotor in it but I dont have an endless amount of money so I guess im not. I see people with RX7s that look/perform great...yet I see and hear about the horrors of the TT Rotary. I see some with 1 engine and a good amount of miles on it, and then I see some that have gone through 3 engines with only 80k miles on the chasis. Im coming off a 3000gt vr4 and I was always worring about my tranny dying (which never happened and I was told compared to others mine was top notch) but I dont want to constantly be worrying about my damn engine blowing on a hot day or something. Should I buy a FD with a blown motor and build it from the ground up and make it a stable engine or what? Thanks for the feedback all.

but what if they treated that one like crap...might have to replace that one 10k down the line or something. You never know with some folks. Also, does anyone know how the interior space of an FD compares to a 3000gt? It looks alittle small...maybe too small.

The interior space of a FD is very small. No back seats, only storage bins. You can't compare a car that weighs 3X00 pounds to one that weighs 2700 lbs and expect the FD to have just as much room as a 3000GT. No offense but a 3000GT is a whale in my eyes.
As for it breaking. I know alot people don't like the automatic FD's, I've never heard of anything abnormally wrong with the 5 speeds in FD's. Some of the '93's had a weak 5th gear synchro that wore out pretty quickly but nothing that makes it undrivable. If you are looking to buy one then do ask the owner to get the engine compression checked by a Mazda Dealer or by a rotary specialist. Also if you are concerned with breaking parts you may want to see about finding a warranty from one of the warranty companys online. I don't have an links for you but just do a search for warranty. Alot of them don't want to give a warranty for such a high maintaince car but you should find one or two of them that will.

Speaking of warrenties... I heard that they are very specific, like if you blow an Apex Seal they wont get you a new motor because they think Apex Seals only break when the car is driven hard/treated poorly... is there any truth to this?

My car's got 88k miles on it and as far as I know the engine has never been rebuilt. Its also an automatic car. People usually don't buy an automatic to hot rod around. Especially for an RX7. Its currently at the shop getting a 5 speed put in. If you want an RX7 with a warranty, check out www.lamotorcars.com. They usually have around 4 or 5 RX7's. Its where I got mine. They all come with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty.

Good news and bad news.
First the good news: FDs are great cars. You'll love them in all aspects; performance, looks, style, and the attention you'll get.
Bad news: MONEY. It may not cost a lot to get the car, no matter if you get one with a blown engine or with a lot of miles, or even if you get one in good condition. The maintenence is what kills us. It costs a lot of money just to keep up. No matter if its oil change every 1500-3000 miles, new plugs, new wires, belts, hoses, or even that $30 fill up on chevron supreme gas.... it all adds up, and keeps adding (and keeps adding). So be prepared.
Anyway, all in all, I love my car and wouldnt trade it for anything (and I DID say anything ). If you really like the car, go for it, just make sure you read up as much as you can and keep it up good, then you'll love yours too.
