Oil residue on the outside of the intercooler pipe ?
The intercooler pipe that comes off the y pipe has dark residue(probably oil) around the coupling and the intercooler part. Is this normal for it to get that dirty. I do has some very very light to no smoke during idle. Greyish blask,barely see it. I also have had some metal on metal sound from shifting from 2nd to 3rd on a hard shift. Not everytime though. Today i noticed that intercooler pipe that connects to the y pipe was sticking up a bit,so i just pushed it back down,and it went down a 1/4 of a inch maybe. I have weird boost problems. No boost in first unless i get on it hard. all the other gears are fine execpt the secondary turbo doesn't kick on till 5,000 rpms is this normal. Ithought 4,500 was !
A little bit of oil on the inside of the intercooler piping is normal, just cus of oil spewing from the turbos. So I guess if the coupler is loose, maybe oil could come out of it? Clean it up, and reinstall it tightly, then see if more appears.
Do you have a digicam? Can you take pics of it?
As for the "wierd" boost problems, what's the pattern? The secondary should kick in at exactly 4500 rpm, and slow kick-in is usually indicative of a non-functioning TCA (turbo control actuator) or one of the vacuum/pressure solenoids/chambers that control it. I had the same problem and yes is was leaking out of the coupler and then dripping down and causing quite a bit of smoke after hard driving. after going through 3 factory couplers in a short period of time (all of them used but in very good condition), i switched to the silicon couplers from the rx-7store. they fit perfectly, are $14 a piece (less than i paid for the used couplers) and haven't failed yet and they've been on there longer than the time it took for 2 couplers to fail. oh yeah, the oil leak is gone now too.

Solve the problem completely and switch to an Efini Yipe. The rubber coupler is eliminated, and the crossover pipe is bolted to the Y-pipe via two flange bolts. This is guaranteed not to fail. Although the $14 Samco coupler might do the trick for the stock US spec FD Y-pipe. You just need to torque the **** out of it to be sure you've got the silicone coupler on TIGHT!
