oil pump chain measurement?

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have a detailed way of measuring the oil pump chain while the front cover is on? I have my motor on the engine stand and the oil pan off. The chain looks like it has more play than it should. If I grab the chain, I can more about 3/4" towards the crank. Is this normal of too loose?

Thanks, Jay

To loose from your discription . As the chain is around the sprocket ,pull the links away from the sprocket in the center of the engagement . There is a spec limit distance for the chain size . I do not know the spec ,sorry .Be safe be sure and replace it . Also check the sprockets for wear marks on the teeth .

One way is to pinch the chain while over the sprockets in the middle and measure the distance from the outsides of the chain. Then spread them apart in the middle and measure again in the same way. It should be about 1/2" difference in measurements.

Thanks for the great info. I knew that I saw that measurement method somewhere before and it was in my Rotary Aviation dvd. The problem is, the front cover is still on and really don't want to remove it. With it on. I grabbed it on one side and was able to move it 3/4"

If the chain is more or at the 1/2" measurement, what sort of problem would this cause? I would think just noise? I don't see how the chain can come off or skip its teeth as there not enough slack in the chain. Is the bottom of the part of the big sprocket always immerse in oil?

Thank, Jay
