Oil Pressure guage replacement?
Oil Pressure guage replacement?
For anyone who doesn't know my project check my signature. I figured you guys would know more about this than the 2nd gen forum since I have your engine. I'm going to do a project that is going to wipe out my oil pressure and water temp guages in my stock 2nd gen guage cluster. I have my PFC to monitor the water temps etc. and I might just end up getting another guage anyhow but I'm mainly concerned about the oil pressure.
I was looking at another thread that was asking what guages to get and nobody said get an oil pressure guage. Is this a guage I would want to have? How much oil pressure should the REW engine see at it's peak? I thought that it was over 100 psi. The autometer guages I'm looking at only go to 100psi. Is this good enough? Should I even bother with an oil pressure guage. Any suggestions are welcome.

The third gen has an oil pressure gauge already, but most people keep that gauge and add others that are needed more. The only downfall to the 3rd gen gauge is the sending units go bad often, for instance I've owned my car for 4 years and have replaced the unit each year...As for the pressure, if the engine is stock, then the wax pellet in the eshaft will remain and oil pressure on startup will be up to about 85-110psi, maybe higher depending on temp. Once the pellet heats up(acts as a thermostat)oil is no longer restricted to the eshaft and rotors so the oil pressure stays lower than 100psi even in the upper rpm band. Now, if you have a motor that's been ported and had the oil passages enlarged and the wax pellet removed, you'll see higher oil pressures all the time, anywhere from 90-120psi. If you lose all oil pressure, you will know very soon thereafter. Suggestion, try to keep an oil pressure gauge hooked up somehow!

Thanks a lot...I just wanted to make sure that the guage I was getting wasn't going to be rendered useless because it's limited to 100 psi. At this point I'm not planning on going with any porting or anything so it would do me well to have at least knowledge that there is pressure. I appretiate your help.
No problem. If you add an oil pressure gauge of your own,ie the autometer one you mentioned, the easiest place to run the fitting is in the banjo oil bolt off the oil filter tower. Just find the proper npt thread size, and drill and tap the banjo bolt. You can even use a pipe T fitting and mount oil temp on one side and pressure on the other. Just a suggestion. I have an oil temp sending unit in my banjo fitting, drilled and tapped myself-Easy to do and makes the wiring short and accessible! Hope that's helpful too. Good luck.

I have custom made -AN oil cooler lines so that won't work for me. I was thinking of using the stock sender location. Since I'm going to be wiping out my guage anyhow, it won't need it in there. I just have to make an adapter if the threads are different, but I don't know if they are or not.
