Yo,

I got little oil leak around the oil pan. It dipped few drops of oil when car parked for few hours.

I took my car to a rotary specialist in town to have a look at it, where fixed my oil pan leak. They said the oil leak was from the tranny seal which located between the rear engine housing and the tranny. It will cost $CAD 380 to fix.

I just wondering it there such a leak??
Also, does this mean any bad thing to my engine???

Thx.

Most likely their talking about the rear main seal. I've had this go bad on all my RX7's. It's a 10 dollar seal but you have to pull down the tranni to get to it.

If you're planning on getting a clutch anytime soon then just wait.

It's only a oil leak, if you can live with the mess then don't worry about it.

It won't hurt your engine as long as you keep oil in your motor. Just keep checking it on a regular basis and you'll be fine.

sup,
I also have a leak but mine is comming from further back. It is more towards the rear and it seems to be coming from around the rear tranny mounts. I took the tranny cover off to pinpoint where it is coming from but the leak seemed to be covered. I will try to get pictures. This leak is dripping from the 2 mounts directly in the middle of the car. Any advice or help is helpful. thanks.

The tranny doesn't have mounts.

I theenk he means the chassis cross-brace directly under the tranny, next to the front of the catalytic converter...

flipmode, what color is the drip? What does it smell like? If it smells like oil, or is brownish in color, then it is actually engine oil, and may also be from the rear main seal. Oil will migrate to the lowest point, and may also be blown back along the tranny underside, making it look like the tranny is leaking when it's not.

If the drip smells like sulfur (kinda like poo, or rotten eggs), then that is more likely tranny fluid. Might be clearer in color or redish, depending on what fluid was used last. If it smells like rotten eggs, then it's more likely a tranny leak, which may be front or rear tranny seal, rear more likely I think. This can actually be replaced on vehicle if it's rear, but rear main engine seal requires dropping the tranny.

Try cleaning the tranny with mild detergent and paper towels, and see where the leak re-develops. See if you can trace it back to its apparant source...

if there is a remote possibility of fluid getting on your clutch, you want to fix it, i don't know how bad your leak is...also, is it oil or tranny oil?

my apologies about the tranny mount thing. It is right where 'spurvo' describes it to be. being at the chassis cross-brace. I will be adding pictures in the next day to get a better visual. The leak isnt very bad.. but after a short or long drive.. it drips little by little, sucking the life away from where ever it came from. But when I warm up the car in the morning, there is no leak. Strange little gremlins at work. I will check again the smell, color, and so forth. Thanks much for the advices.

Alright. I checked it out and took pics of the leak. I will be uploading it shortly. The smell of the oil smells just like motor oil and not of the tranny. (no rotten egg smell). My main question is how would it be collecting all the way back there (further back beyond the transmission). Hopefully the pictures will tell a little more.

Ok. There is a picture online and according to www.a-spectuning.com the crossbar is actually called "Transmission brace" so in a way it is mount. and my leak is coming from the two in the direct middle and dripping a lil from the brace itself. again, my leak is minimal but i fear it may lead to worse things. any advice is welcome.

do you have the pan underneith the tranny? I have found that leaks from the oil pan or the engine mounts can blow back onto this pan and then blow up onto the cat, causing quite a bit of smoke. a small leak (more of a seepage) can result in oil going everywhere and be very difficult to trace.

my advice is to clean up everything underneith really well with a good degreaser and then check it every few days to find out where the leak is actually someing from.
