CA Oil Gauge acting unusual after driving for a while

Hey,
For the last couple years my FD's oil gauge has always been at 60 psi when driving and 40 psi when idling. Now recently after driving for a over 15 min (including at least 10 min highway) I notice the gauge reads 50 or so when driving and in the 20's when idling. Once I stop the car and let it cool it goes back to normal for like I said 15 minutes or so. I'm guessing the issue has something to do with car's temperature.

I have not had it looked at in over a year as its been running great beside the usual oil changes. There is a oil leak but its been there for years and the last fd specialist said its nothing major. Mind you this was a year ago and maybe its status has changed.

Anyways, what do you guys think. Time to get it checked or simply faulty gauge?

Any ideas what the issue could be?

Thanks

Seb

Those factory oil sensors are known to be faulty. They never read correctly. For instance my pressure gauge takes a full 9-10 seconds to read anything after start up. It just sits at zero for 10 seconds. Not to mention I've turned the car on a few times before and had it jump past 120psi and just stick there. Rotary engines rarely have oil issues. And most of the time an oil pressure issue is only present after some other catastrophic failure. Don't worry about it too much.

The stock gauge and sender are garbage. The sender is mostly at fault but I don't like to trust a 15 year old gauge anyway. You can replace the sender and it will work for a while but eventually they all crap out. The other solution is a quality aftermarket gauge.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I think/hope you are right.

My only consern is that if it is the oil gauge being faulty wouldn't it not work all the time. Today after a 10 min drive it poped from 60 -30 psi driving and on idle as low at 10-15. Also, do you think its even possible that something could be wrong given there is an oil leak? Is it possible the oil leak got bigger over time and weather changes.

What do you think?

Thank you,

Seb

I'm going to try my first repair and see if I change the oil gauge it solves the problem. Is there some way I can check if it is the oil gauge before even buying it or is it best to just replace it and see if it works?

If you guys deside replacing it is the best way. Do you know where I can find an aftermarket gauge online and some instructions on how to replace/install it?

Thanks guys

Seb

You have 40 psi at idle? That seems like a lot to me. I think that the factory spec is 50 psi at 3000 rpm.

Gotta hate those factory senders. Finally just replaced mine myself, works great when new lol.

I see around 35psi at idle, 55psi at cruising and 60+ under load/rpm

an oil leak won't cause you're oil pressure to be low unless your oil level is also low. Check your oil. if there is oil on the stick all should be fine and is most likely just the sender. My oil gauge jumps all around too. as was stated these cars rarely have oil problems, so just make sure the car has oil and is changed regularly.
