oil catch can

anyone use an oil catch can(tank)? How does it work and what is it used for? I read on greddy.com that it "catches the oil and moisture in the blow-by gas that causes carbon and sludge build-up in the intake system and the engine. It keeps the engine clean even under hard driving conditions." Does this mean that if you don't use it the oil might leak out of the engine under hard driving?
