Oil in air hose

Folks very kindly told me that it is not unusual to get oil in the elbow and air hose. After spinning out at an autocross practice today, I noticed that I was getting some oil leaking from where the air hose connects with the charge air cooler. I have yet to take it apart and clean it out, I'll do that tomorrow. I guess I'm wondering how much oil is normal in the elbow and air hose? Also, does the oil there create any particular problems?

Also, some have suggested an oil catch can and pointed me to a link that describes one installation. I've read it, but am too stupid to follow it very well. If the oil can create significant problems, then I suppose I could give it a shot. If so, is there a source for a catch can designed for the FD, hopefully with very, very, good directions?

How much is normal probably varies with the use of the car and it's age. My car never smoked from the oil but it never dripped either. Still, I made a point to clean out the cross-over and IC once a year or so, especially after I started autoX'ing. I just used a little dish soap and hot water at a big utility sink and rinsed it well.
If your leaking/sweating oil at a coupler, you may also have a small boost leak.

I did a track day at a local track in NZ (has about 2 hard breaking corners, and the rest of the track is on throttle - the main straight you can click 240 KM/hr on! - so bascially on boost most of the time) and when I got home, I noticed a 'spray' of oil on the underside of the hood, and drips below the throttle body.

I might have a bit of leaking from my turbos, but I think most of it is a result of the crank ventilation system. How much did it leak? Quite a bit.

I found out that I have a very small leak (bad elbow to throttle body gasket - top and bottom) that was allowing some to come out.

Bottom line, it scared me how much oil was getting used the wrong way.... hope that makes you feel a bit better about things
