I've said it many times before in these fuel filter threads....I would put on 3 downpipes rather than do 1 fuel filter......ugh!

Try doing the Fuel filter relocation mod to the Engine Bay. Once done, it's a snap.

Will the bosch filter fit in the stock location? I thought I read somewhere that it had to be relocated, or that it was smaller than oem. I need to change mine and I bought the bosch. Need to know if it will work. Thanks

Mazda says every 30,00 miles. But they also say accelerated warmup system is good...

It's the same filter used on the Miata, believe or not. Changing every year or 15k miles is a good idea. Blowing a motor b/c of a clogged fuel filter would seriously suck.

Right, same filter as Miata. The Miata manual also says to replace every 30k miles. Since we flow MUCH more fuel in the '7, it's smart to change more often. 15k miles sounds right.

What are some of the problems associated with an "old" fuel filter, if not changed? Lack of performance? Acceleration creep?

In an extreme case a clogged filter could cause you to run lean, detonate, and pop goes the weasel. After you've done it a few times, it gets much easier, although it still does suck .

Edit: The last sentence applies to both changing the fuel filter and to popping motors

the fuel filter was a PITA!! it'd have been much easier if the hoses woulda came right off. i had to kind of work blind to do it and use my trusty crafstman 45* needle noses to work the hoses loose. took me a lot longer than i had ever thought, but better safe than sorry

I have a question, ErnieT suggested I take it to the local dealer to have them do this PITA. I did...but after reading this thread I had this thought creep into my head.....what if they said they did it but really didn't because it was such a PITA??? They never said anything to me about how much it sucks, how long it took, yadda yadda..and I can just hear a dealer tech griping.

Anyway I can look underneath and tell? If something did go boom could they relate it back to the fuel filter and clearly tell that a FF with less than 1000 miles on it shouldn't look like "X"

BTW, yes I do have the receipt for work done.

The standard recomendation for replacement on a fuel filter is every third oil change or 10,000 miles on a fuel injected engine.

I would guess that they didnt do **** and charged you for it but then again im a cynic. you can look at the fuel filter if you get underneath the car and remove some paneling. It is above the differential but unless you know what the old one looked like or can be sure that you have a new one in there, then theres no way of telling if they did anything at all.

This is why you have a legal right to see your old parts when your car is serviced. Take advantage of it when going to a new/dubious mechanic.

BTW, I'm not as cynical as Curly Bill, the Mazda service departments may be clueless how to work on FDs, but I've never had one that lied about the work they did either....
