oh dear, you know that "ticking" sound I've been hearing.......

well I thought it was coming from my alternator, then I thought it was my injectors because the sound came from under the UIM, but today I have taken the UIM off to check it out and found a pool of oil under there, along with a broken metered oil line, so my front rota hasnt been getting any oil therefore I think the sound is coming from a f**ked apex seal .
The funny thing is I havent seen any problems with my oil pressure.

but I'll replace the line and see how it goes, although I'm guessing this is major rebuild time ( at least) .

check your plug wires too, it might have a rip on it, that will also cause the ticking sound...could be spark hitting the engine..

the metering line break will not cause anyoil press loss. i doubt the sound is a apex seal. honestly not a huge prob get the line fixed and what Kali said is a valid point about spark noise. how's the idle? vac? i would bet the noise is the pcv valve. does it make noise when you shake it? just noticed you are from nz. do you guys have pcv systems???

Exhaust leaks can cause a sort of ticking.

do u hear this sound throughtout the entire powerband? im also hearing a fast paced ticking sound but its isolated to between 1700-2000 rpms... after that it becomes inaudible... but then again i have the Apex'i N1 so pretty much everything is inaudible

I doubt the ticking is an apex seel. Many 3G 7s tick. I believe it was narrowed down to the stock turbo system. Some thought it was a loose actuator flapper in the exhaust or such.

I have a '87 RX-7 engine that was without oil injection for likely tens of thousands of miles (fixed now). It's still running strong. I have heard that the housings get scorched more and the apex seals can weld themselves to the rotor but I doubt that a rebuild is needed. Is your vacuum ok?

I only hear the ticking between idle and 2000rpms, anything above that it goes away until the revs drop again. Vacume is fine.

Things I will do this weekend-

1.check sparkplug wires
2.check my turbos ( actuator flappers etc...
3.Fix the damn broken metered oil line
4. Get my alternator checked out
5.Get my injectors cleaned
6. check all my resistors ( that have replaced my solenoids after going non-seq)

I was thinking, I have my air pump removed( including assembly under UIM) if I had a leak or something similar with one of my block-off plates could this also cause this noise?

Is this something you hear while driving or when reving under the hood? It could just be belt noise...

I had a similar ticking sound experience.

For me it turned out to be a RIPPED Sparkplug boot.

Idle and low RPS, it was arching from the boot to the nearest metal.

Tonight go and start the car, and look, see if you see sparks..

like I said, it only happens between idle and 2000rpm, when I rev from under the hood ( stationary) once it goes above the 2000rpm it seems to go away, but becasue the 'ticking' noise speeds up with the rpm I'm guessing the only reason you cant hear it at high rpm is becasue it becomes inaudiable at that speed.

the 'ticks' speed up and slow down with the rpm until above 2000rpm or around abouts

the reason I'm a little sceptical of the plug wires being a problem is that the noise is deffinatly coming from the UIM from around the injector area, right around where the metered oil tubes meet the top of the rota housings to be precise.
