I've talked to Recaro rep in US of A and Mazda owns the fabric pattern and design for the Spirit R/RZ Recaros. Which means, Recaro can't sell it to you. Which means, you need to ask Mazda and see if they will sell it in bulk.... I highly doubt that they will since I've heard you need verification that you own a Spirit R FD in order for them to sell you a new seat or new seat cover.. well, that's what I've heard (as I was wanting to get a new cover for mine).

1) I'm assuming you're talking about the OEM Recaro seats in Japanese FD's... (pretty much *any* genuine Recaro seat would be considered "official," would it not? )
2) A group buy? Sure...if you buy 30 pairs or more, I'm sure I can work something w/ Mazda Japan. Otherwise...
3) Barban, you've been misinformed. The OEM Recaros are one of the most expensive seats I've ever heard of. They're no where NEAR $2500 each. Back in '01, they were $3800 per seat. In the past two years or so, someone else priced them, and they were up in the $4K+ range per seat. Mind you, this is NOT including the rails, which are not sold as one piece, but rather as several individual pieces. And before you ask, both the seats and the rails can ONLY be obtained from Mazda Japan. Recaro Japan does NOT sell them, and will simply refer you to Mazda. This avenue has been exhausted time and time again with the same results.
4) For comparison purposes, the OEM Recaro carbon kevlar seat for the Porsche GT3 is $4700 or so, so it's definitely up there too.
5) It's important to note that these seats aren't your average aftermarket seats. They're made by Recaro, which is IMO the best racing seat manufacturer. And these seats are indeed all-out racing seats. As such, they're non-reclinable, and are primarily intended for weight savings in racing -- they weigh in at about 10.5 lbs per seat, rails not included. They have slits for 5-point harnesses, and the covers are made from a very expensive flame-retardant material. So they're expensive, but IMO rightfully so.
6) Lastly, I grab these seats every chance I get when they pop up for sale in Japan - which is not often. If you (or anyone else) would like a set, feel free to drop me a PM. FYI, however, at any given time, I have 2 - 3 ppl on the waitlist, and so (to be blunt) plz no lowballers or dreamers. It's quite a hassle to find 'em, and in good condition, and ship 'em over. And now that the Japs are realizing how rare these seats are (4 years after they've been out of production), they're asking more and more for them...not to mention it's becoming progressively harder to find them in good condition.
Thanks
~Ramy
PS: Phil, not all the Recaros are from the Spirit R. Earlier models (RZs for example) had the Recaros as well. A few years ago (3 or so) the covers were about $600 a pop, but I priced them again about a year ago, and they were $1100 a pop. So IMO, the high price of a good set is easily justified.

7racer, I actually already have your set, but I won't be home for another week and a half to ship it to ya.
As for your other parts, I just got a tentative shipping quote a few days ago, and am waiting on the final shipping quote, which I'll pay promptly, and then your parts will be here shortly after
Thanks for your patience
~Ramy
EDIT: That shipping quote is for ALL the parts various ppl are waiting on... needless to say, it's gonna be a BIG shipment...

Bah humbug. I meant used seats. I thought I recalled seeing one for 2500. Either way theyre priced above thier value in my small universe. Think you could pull and extra 8 grand out of a used fd because of those seats? I dunno. If so theyre totally worth it. I really wish I could afford a set but they cost about a semester of college including books and housing.

I was just kidding and talking about a set of seats not the diffuser....is that what you meant? You didn't find another set of seats did you?

7racer, the "other parts" I was referring to were the struts and Mazdaspeed diffuser. As for the seats, yea, I'm serious. You said you wanted a pair, so I got one for ya

they actually do recline. its not like your regular reclining seats tho. the sliders themselves have a tilt feature which is really nice. only reclining racing seats i have ever seen. i never actually seen these seats in person but i have a FD video and the guy gets in the car and tilts the seat with a lever underneath..
