Odd Electrical Problem...

While trying to start my car tonight to go for a lil cruise around town the car decided it didn't want to start and all electrical power disappeared. All I did was turn the key in the ignition and I hear a click and then all the lights and all go out. So I try again and the car is just completely dead and wont do anything. I pop the hood and the second I touched the battery cover the lights in the car go on and she then started up fine. Didn't have the same problem trying to start it afterwards except my normal "must maintain an idle NOOO DON'T DIE!!! OMG GIVE HER GAS!"

Anyways just curious if anyone has had this problem or a possible reason why this would happen...I know the other day I had to crank the motor for way longer then normal to get her to start and that was only after tapping on the gas. Damn FD's. Love hate relationship.

double check your pos and neg battery terminals for proper connection. it would be a good time to inspect/clean posts. use those terminal washers - the green and red or black and red fuzzy type. they will prevent any acid from spilling over. also use some battery spray to help prevent the acid crud from building. it also helps maintain electrical contact.

Thanks for the info. I will have to check all that soon but I also suspect I need a new battery cause to tell you the truth I really don't know how old the one I have is...but my guess is over 4-5 years. Here in Reno batteries never last that long thanks to our ever changing climate.

how often do you drive your FD? If its not your daily then I would recommend getting a battery tender (not a charger). Check out www.batterytender.com I have one and I love it! I also use this Charge-It battery additive found at this link: http://www.autobarn.net/chargeit.html I'm sure stores in Reno should have someting similar. This charge it stuff is supposed to keep the electrolyte and plates clean and prolong battery life. The battery tender will monitor/maintain a charge at 13.5V (maybe 14V I don't recall now). If the voltage drops below, it will do a very slow charge. A buddy of mine uses a tender for his 67 vette - same battery for over 11 yrs!
